On the 29th of July 1782, the HMS Santa Margarita, a 36-gun fifth rate frigate under the command of Captain Elliot Salter, captured the 36-gun Amazone off Cape Henry, Virginia. The next day, a French squadron, under the command of Louis-Philippe de Rigaud, Marquis de Vaudreuil, retook the Amazone.
