    Default 27 July

On 27 July 1776, during the American Revolution, the Continental Brig Reprisal, commanded by Captain Lambert Wickes, was transporting the newly appointed commercial and naval agent to Martinique, William Bingham, when the British Sloop-of-War Shark approached the Reprisal at the entrance to St. Pierre Harbor. After a sharp encounter and inconclusive action, Shark withdrew and Reprisal entered port. During her journey from Delaware, Reprisal captured four British merchant vessels: the ship Friendship (11 Jul); schooner Peter (13 Jul); and the vessels Neptune and Duchess of Leinster (specific Jul date not identified).

    Reprisal was certainly appropriately named.
