Default On this day 21 July - the naval battle of Louisbourg

On the 21st of July 1781, French and British ships fought off the harbor of Spanish River, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The French 34-gun frigate Hermione, under the command of Admiral Louis-René Madelaine Le Vassor, comte de La Touche-Tréville, and the 38-gun frigate Astrée, under the command of Jean François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse, attacked a British convoy consisting of five escorts, nine coal-transporting ships, and four supply ships. The escorts were the 28-gun frigate Charlestown, the 24- and 20-gun sloops Allegiance and Vulture, respectively, the 14-gun armed transport Vernon, and the 14-gun Jack. Hermione and Astrée severely damaged the Charlestown, and captured the Jack. The remaining British ships were able to complete their original mission of picking up and transporting coal to Halifax.

Another demonstration of British inadequacy in smaller-ship crews, as well.
