On the 16th of July 1798, the United States Congress created the rank of Rear Admiral to honor the leadership and service of David Glasgow Farragut. Prior to this, the American Navy used the term Flag Officer to differentiate the rank from those used by European navies. Farragut, subsequently, became the first Vice Admiral and Admiral in the United States Navy.
