    Got the rudder finished up. Just need to add gallery and the bow decorations and the main shape is finished up. Then it’s on to final deck layouts and furnishings.

    Nice cambering on the transom. The lack of crown to the decks on miniatures always bugs me, and it's nice to see it represented in your transom.

    Thanks! I didn’t have time to take real screen shots tonight so I used the phone. I cut the windows in. I need to add the ‘lights’ I believe they are called. I then will narrow the area where the rudder and stem meet up and shape the back to the stern so it transitions well. Then the quarter galley. Then it’s on to the head/bow.

    Oh and I need to cut the stern gun ports out on the quarter deck and the two below for the gun deck. Then I need to fill in the top bulwarks and add the top of the frames in the front. And the catheads. And the channels.. oh boy.

    The hull is cut up on small quads. I should be able to punch holes using my old code with some extra code. I added the top bulwarks and gun ports.

    Appreciate it! Some tutorials I’ve watched said to start roughing it out first and then make a medium detailed pass and then add the fine details. I am somewhere between roughing it out and medium at the moment. I’m ensuring I can get these textured the way I want without having to start over so I’m proceeding with caution. Here is a trial mast texture I made from scratch. I plan on adding the fish along the sides of the mast for the finished detail. I’m learning that to texture a 100 foot long object such as the hull using a massive texture isn’t a good solution here and I need to employ some tricks of the trade.

    Finally got my head around how basically a mast is constructed and boiled it down to a medium detailed poly. I still need to add the wooldings and square up the mast head.

    I did have to drop off for some years due to competing priorities. I did keep polishing my 3D skills so when my kids are a little older I can resume with some efficiency. I recently got a a 3D printer and printed out my old game model ship. I am liking the results thus far. Early prototype that I’ve beat up a bit.

    1) I started a historical ship database. This database tracks a ship from it being laid out, to completion, commission, recommisions, paid off, and finally the fate.     Once a good database is established then I will expand into more campaign options.

    2) I started building a designer tool for accurate coastline and ports. This tool uses background images to aid in the shaping of the coastline and port shapes. This will then tie into the database of ships to eventually replay out history of what all happened around the age of sail.

    I am focusing on the Portsmouth and French coastline as a starting point. Progress pictures to follow this week.

    James - Thank you for the kind words. I will definitely reach out to SoG memebers when that time comes. I have not coded in a few years now. I am leaning towards using an established game engine such as unreal when I get back to that eventually (and time permits). Right now I am focused on 3D asset creation and learning artist techniques that I can load into a game engine. These are things I can pick up and put down easily. This is just a hobby and is really enjoyable to explore what is possible.
