Here's a look at the starter set. I have to say, the models are quite disappointing.

In what respect are they not up to snuff Jason?

There doesn't look to be much detail on the sculpts, especially given that it's a 1:600 scale (if I recall correctly). I'm sure they'll look better painted, but it doesn't seem like they're giving people much to work with.

    Thanks Jason.
With my deteriorating eyesight I need all the detail I can latch onto for painting these days.

I respectively have to disagree. Here are shots from my set that arrived a couple of weeks ago. One is the First Rate sculpt and the other Blackbeard's Revenge. I think much of the detail is more subtle and isn't as evident on the brown plastic. I fully expect that when Julian finishes up painting some of these models they will certainly impress.

Have you had a chance to play yet Jim? Was supposed to have a game last weekend, but fell through, and difficult now to get folks together.

I'm inclined to agree with Jason. The minis look more like playing pieces than models. The SoG minis are a big step ahead. However, I look forward to seeing some Oak and Iron ships with paint dabbed on. I do like the time period.

I thought of making house rules for SoG 17th century, but stopped. On the upside, there would be genuine PIRATES! On the flipside, the game wouldn't change much except the ships wouldn't sail as close to the wind, gunfire would be slower with less damage, and combat range would be shorter.

That's certainly much better than was apparent in the video!

I have not gotten the chance to play a game. Gaming has been curtailed significantly due to the virus situation. If anything I may try to paint up a ship or two. As I mentioned above I'm very interested to see what Julian does with the models.

I am now a bit more interested than I was having seen your photos Jim and heard that they are more like playing pieces. strangely that appeals to my vision of Pirate ships and may just turn into a good fun option to play with the Kids using Sails basic rules.
    I wonder?

I had significant problems watching that video. He mixed up the fluyt and the galleon and said that the galleon was definitely a fluyt. He also turned mizzen masts backwards or sideways. Very frustrating.

    Not a great video.

However there are loads of photos of models appearing on the various naval wargaming groups on Facebook and they do look rather lovely, much better than early shots would have suggested

I am painting mine now and will post some shots.

I posted on the Kickstarter that the ships do look and feel more like playing pieces than models. Some of this is the feel of them - softer plastic than the Ares ships or the Warlord Black Seas ships. I would agree with Jason that the detail on the small ships like the sloop is a bit soft, but the larger ships as you see are detailed nicely.

However I quite like the playing piece feel to them. They paint up nicely and I don't feel the need to rig them. Mike, the rules author, told me that you could leave them unglue to take the masts off for storage or to show damage, but I am not sure how well the paint will last with that kind of handling.

I am a bit dubious about the scale when compared to the Warlord 1/700 scale models. The fourth rate model is smaller than the Warlord 38 gun 5th rate. Could be accurate though.

That will be most interesting to see. Thanks Eric.

Julian just posted his completed fleet on the Chippy Shop: What's on your workbench for April. They look pretty darned impressive to me!
