Default Age of Sail "On the Cheap"

So, I am a big fan of the various rulesets put out by Ganesha Games.

A year or so ago, they developed an Age of Sail ruleset called "Galleys and Galleons" along with the expansion "Fayre Winds and Foul Tydes".

It covers Real World and "Fantastic" stuff as well. A great way to introduce Landlubbers to the Era and lets you use whatever minis you want.

In my case I picked up a bunch of the Cheap "Pirates of" Constructible Card ships for use with it, as I can toss it all in a box and haul it around without worries about the rigging or masts:

As a more robust test I played out "Strachan's Action" using the rules. A lot of fun.

Here's a set of Age of Sail rules I played a number of years ago and really liked:

They are currently out of print, but I have an electronic copy for anyone interested.

Thanks for the "Heads up" Dave. I'm sure a lot of shipmates will be interested in availing themselves of this freebee.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

I have lately been using "Kiss Me Hardy" a rule set by Too Fat Lardies that is on the cheaper side, 9.00 pounds currently but they do have sales. It works well for larger engagements and fleet actions and highlights the differences in training and tactical doctrine between the sides in the Napoleonic Wars.

Nick has appeared on the TFL forums asking for ideas related to a KMH update. It is an idea they have kicked around for while but with all their other projects got put on the back burner. Also he sees the rules working as intended so is not going for a complete re-write.
