    Default Fire on board

I finished some fire on board markers this morning, and that's how they look on the ship:

Looks good, how do you get them to stay upright?

I used pipe cleaner as marker's backbone. I twisted it to spiral shape (at the bottom) to make some kind of stand. Also, I used masts and sails to improve "grip".

Nice! What did you use around the pipe cleaner? cotton?

First, I mixed water and foam (old sponge), so that water fully covered it in food processor, and chopped all together.

Then, I coarsly drained water (as much as I could) and mixed chopped foam with PVA glue.

Then I formed "flatbreads" and left them to dry, taking care they don't stick to the surface.

When upper side was dry enough I turned it over and left for a day or two, to dry completely.

Then I broke off little bit by bit and glued them with all purpose glue to the pipe cleaner (rubbing it betwen fingers to take care it glues well).

After that I left formed markers to dry.

Tomorrow I painted markers with grey (I mixed black and white in various ammounts). When dry, I highlihted them first with black, than with white, trying to blend highlights in the middle part of marker.

(It maybe sounds like lot's of work, but it actualy isn't. Only you lose lots of time waiting for drying in different stages ).

Very nice, Heмaњa. They look great. Such things will add to the visuals of AARs and to games.

You should try doing some orange and yellow near the base. Even if you go over it with black smoke, you'd still get a "glowing" look out of it that would add more visual flare.

Andy, "open fire" look is very atractive and I've done it with my WoG flame markers. Here, I deliberately decided not to - in this scale even 1/8 of an inch would mean fire is more than 8 feet high.

Nice work. Much better than a chit.

That's why I was thinking it would look better as a glowing background underneath the smoke. 8 foot tall flames are actually short.

I really like this ... how did you form the base so it sits neatly on the deck? I agree with above ... glow effects would look spectacular!

    Thank you for this!

Has anyone created effects for cannon smoke ... I have been using cotton

Yep! Works great! Thanks for sending me one Ed. I wondered where you got it. Now I'll have to order a dozen more for only $8.

How big are they? Those have a lot of nifty potential.

Plenty of room on the SOL's. A tight fit between the main and foremast on the Frigates.

Will they fit when ratlines and rigging go on the ship?

Don't think so. But I haven't rigged my SGN's yet.

It's tight Bobby. This is the 114 gun Reina Luisa and it just barely fits with the smoke off to one side. It would fit easier without rigging of course, but who would want ships without rigging?

Hard to capture the flickering red & yellow with a still photo. Gunner sent me this, kind fellow that he is, and I have had loads of fun with it in games. When a fire is rolled I bring it out and set it on or beside the stricken ship and the players go wild! Seriously!

It could have more uses than with just ships. It would really look good over the hatch of a burning tank. Or for WOG...when a plane is shot down place the plane on the mat off its stand with the fire on it.

Here is another really great looking fire/smoke/explosion piece that I found. I am trying to locate the manufacturer now. They were purchased at a comics shop in Georgia. A friend is investigating for me.

I found a tutorial "Making Smoke and Flames" at:

    http://www.blmablog.com/2011/03/maki...nd-flames.html

It looks pretty good but I'm not sure I like the weight of the base for setting on my ships. But I can see modifying that to work better.

I was wondering if something could be done with this sort of thing to produce a light effect, it would of course have to be incorporated into the smoke part of the model.

Go to Fire Kit, in the LED section.
