On the 18th of March 1799, the HMS Telegraph captured the French ship Hirondelle near Īle de Batz. The French privateer approach the British brig and the two ships began firing upon each other. The Telegraph was armed with fourteen 18-pound carronades and two 6-pound chase guns; the Hirondelle had sixteen 8-pound and 6-pound guns. Though outmanned, Lieutenant James Andrew Worth led the British to victory after having dismasted the French ship, and was awarded the rank of Commander.
