On the 13th of March 1811, the Battle of Lissa took place between French, Italian, and British forces off the island of Lissa in the Adriatic Sea. The French sought to capture the island from the British, and, thereby, gain supremacy of, the Adriatic. This was important to safeguard French supply to its army along the eastern shore. Though outgunned, the British, under the command of Captain William Hoste, defeated the French, under the command of Commodore Bernard Dubourdieu. Both sides suffered significant loss, including the death of Dubourdieu. The British victory crippled French expansion in the Balkans region.

I think it was supposed to be "Balkans", as Lissa is just off the coast of Croatia.
