    Default Internet stuff

My internet is limping along, sometimes this website comes up and sometimes it does not. Are the plans to integrate the site into the Wings forum still under consideration?

As I understand it, it will happen. I am not the right person to reply, perhaps.

But I am definitely ready to help and do my part to make this great community for this great game thrive

Keith is exploring the options and trialing different platforms before we make the jump. This may take a while yet. I am also getting the odd Database error both when logging on and more annoyingly when transferring data such as photographs or when accessing the Admin section or jumping back to the main threads.
WHEN TRYING AGAIN a few minutes later and it has rectified itself. I put it down to the FUF.

Is there any transparency in the process? Do we know what potential platforms are being considered?

    Another no I'm afraid James.
As Keith owns the sites it is totally up to him what he does with them.

The Aerodrome is moving to Invision if Keith gets the funding in time. What happens to us is up in the air... he refuses to trust anyone with the simple but time consuming database remapping I've proposed, and either won't look into or won't share any cost projections. It looks like this site is going to be either quietly abandoned to founder at anchor, or scuttled.

We certainly do not have enough active members left to raise any money that would be enough to save the site DB.

I don't know if this is viable or not, but apparently you can download websites/forums to view offline. If the main goal is to preserve content 'somewhere' this might be an option?

I've just read Keith's notice on the aerodrome site about transitioning to a new server but I imagine that's not going to happen with the sails site unless he will have a separate section on the Aerodrome site for Sails going forward. Presumably that will mean we will lose everything here at best and at worst will lose communication with each other going forwards.

I'm not the most active member of the board and will never be either, but I would like to have some place to keep up with the games and sailing innovations that are proposed here, Rob and Dobbs, I'm looking at you particularly.

I currently have a Blogger Blog and had been thinking about setting up a second one specifically to record my Plane and Ship games. On the assumption that this site will close I wonder if there is any mileage in setting up either 1 Blog that we can all contribute to or a loose confederation of Blogs that we run individually but follow each other, so get news and support in a community.

Unfortunately, under the circumstances, I'm going away for a month next monday and so won't be able to contribute much until it's probably too late. Bugger bugger bugger.

To continue to access this site there is something called the Way Back Machine or something similar, I've no idea how it works, does anyone have more of an idea than me?

    Cheers

I am saving the E-Mail adresses of those members who give me written permission so that we can keep in touch.
Also I have saved a good deal of content to my home computer including all the Campeign scenarios but not the actual AARs except my own. I am hoping to ressurect these on a sub forum in the new Wings Forum if Keith does not object.
It would be similar to the T&T one in format I suspect.
If you have not already contributed to the fund for saving the Wings Forum please do so ASAP.

Hi Rob I've just had a response from Keith in the raising money thread on the Aerodrome site. He's confirmed there will be a section for Sails on the new site and the possibility of manually adding pre existing info from here.

You're obviously already on this, I'm happy to try and assist by downloading files onto my lap top if you'd like to point me in the right direction. I already have some of the Campaign scenarios, not sure if I've got them all but it sounds as if you have.
I've also got quite a few of the files from the files sections but I don't always have the original provider of the file to give them attribution, do you think that matters?
As I said originally I've only got a few days before being away for a month, please let me know if you think there's anyway I can help.
Regarding the new forum fund, as soon as I saw it I contributed, hopefull we will make the target.
Oh and you have my written permission to use my email address.
    Cheers

I still have all my original AAR on my home computer. I’m thinking it will be easy enough to repost.

Just $31 shy of the goal when I last checked.

    Thanks John.
Have a good break and just carry on the way you are going.
I started a thread a while ago on here to document the files and posts collected for transfer but not many people added to it so am not sure where we are.

We have met our target chaps, and Keith has granted us a sub forum on the new Drome once it is established..

"Manual Add" means we have to archive our own content and start new threads as if it had never existed, as I understand it.

It's at $2639 out of a $1900 goal to save the Aerodrome, and I'm trying to con Keith into putting the excess into Anchorage if we can put enough points on the board. We'd need to get to $4900, which is about $2300 away. Get us within fifty bucks and I'll personally write the last check to get us over the top. :)

You may also want to save your personal details from your profile page, medal awards rank etc as a precaution.

    Oh my!

Just come back to see this fine forum folding up? Say it ain't true!

At least to stay in contact, maybe we could consider forming a group at Discord?
Discord is poor as a resource & knowledgebase compared to a forum but it works fine for keeping in touch and to spread information.
It could possibly "collect" the people and provide them with a pointer to where the new "port" for Sails of Glory will be.

Already starting one. DM me your Discord usernames, everyone, and I'll send invites. The Lifeboat barely has a keel laid, but it'll give us a way to keep in touch until a safe harbor is carved out in Aerodrome 2.0 and I welcome any shipwrights wishing to help build it..

    A thought just strikes me:

Perhaps it might be possible for Admiral Bligh to send a message to all members of this forum with a link to the said Discord invite.

As the link expires after one week, the process might have to be repeated.

This way, we may be able to get the (active) members over into the "lifeboat" in time just in case this forum might be "sinking".

Re the Anchorage's future, it's a given there WILL be one in Aerodrome 2.0. The concern with us here right now is looking for a way to preserve the database and its content in-toto and buy time to move content over without losing a decade-plus of information and contributions.

This may be common knowledge to some, but for those who aren't aware Boardgame Geek has a Sails of Glory forum on their website. It's not particularly active but it includes photos, files and general questions over the years since Sails of Glory has been in release.

    https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/...glory/forums/0

As for finding a way to preserve the database I suspect you're not going to find anything that's inexpensive or doable in the short term.

I've tried to save information from the 1st 2 pages of House Rules by coping and pasting into Word, but it's on a very adhoc basis. I looked at your thread that relates to whats been saved and you mentioned blogs had been, but all your treads in Historical Discussions on ship types, eg 18lb British Frigates are not on your blog. Do you have them saved on your home computer?
I'd not come across the threads before and they're an invaluable resourse.
I'm off in a couple of hours time for a month so won't be any help in any further information saving.
Good luck and keep manning the pumps.

    hi guys,
I'm one of the predominantly only readers, but this very regularly.
I think a lot of the really active people are already on both platforms.
Rob has also collected addresses before, but Discord is certainly an interesting story.

It certainly doesn't hurt to take part in the fundraising campaign, even if it
probably won't be enough for a migration from Anchorage, but who knows.

Elsewhere I have already suggested to save both pages on “archive.org”, but someone
with the appropriate rights would have to do this so that all subpages are also saved.
This would make it relatively easy for everyone to access all the data on the Internet,
so that it could be copied over bit by bit.
I can see someone (whoever) tried some snapshots on archive.org recently, but it will
not work without the needed rights and configuration.
Maybe someone here or at the wings-site has some deeper knowgledge, if this is wanted.

It gets worse, some Criminal Misallocation of Viable Organs just hacked the Drome website and wiped it all out sometime in the past day. Hope Keith can get it restored from a backup rather than just go full steam ahead on moving it and scuttle the ship out from under us.

I had no idea about this state of affairs DB as I have been unable to access the Drome for nearly a week. thanks for letting us know DB.

This could really make the final arrangements for Doncaster difficult for us . I will contact a few shipmates who are also Drome members and inform them.

Not a good sign. Thanks for the info, DB. I had noticed that the 404 message was new and assumed the website was taken off-line - and not wiped out. I hope, given that the Drome was attacked in the past, that there IS a backup - unlike what happened when the host server for several UK wargaming shops went down.

I wonder if Keith's fly-by-night webhost saw and took exception to my remarks about their substandard service...

Apparently a hacker (or hackers) that go by the name DikXploit. I found nothing on them, which might indicate a relative nobody trying to make their name in hackerdom, but what do I know?

yeah we had this poor hack not the first time.

I didn't kow how the backup is made, but Keith should think also about continously syncing the contents to something like web.archive.org like said sometimes before.
On web.archive.org it's slow but always available and a site can be rebuilded from.
Unfortunately I don't have any in-depth knowledge myself, I just like to read in it sometimes, but maybe another Wings or Sails buddy

Also someone is trying to save from time to time for wings and sails, but I think more rights (to robots.txt) are needed to do sol:
    https://web.archive.org/web/20240000...wingsofwar.org
    https://web.archive.org/web/20240000...ilsofglory.org

Just to see how it is working with an extensive synced website:
    https://web.archive.org/web/20131021....com/Main-Page

That is pretty low. However, we'll just have to start again if Keith is unable to recover anything. I'm sure we can manage that between us. Slow but sure and just enjoy it.
Re. Doncaster, I'll bet most folk already know the score and the programme. Hopefully, all that most of us need to do is turn up with whatever kit we are committed to providing. That said, Rob, if there is anything I can do to help that I'm not aware of or has just gone over my head, just let me know here or via my e mail and I'll do what I can. :pint:

Apparently, DikXploit are a group that were on brag sites like defacement, but haven't been active for around three years. I wonder why they have suddenly popped up again after such a period!

I sent Keith an email, but with him being largely absentee... well, scum like this prey on absentee site-owners who don't take swift corrective action.

At the very least the "Hacked by..." webpage, which is now the Aerodrome home page should be replaced with something...anything at all.

Yeah. And I'm starting to think that with our impending Duguay-Trouining it might be a good idea to close down new registrations.

Well, after all the worries of the past week, the Aerodrome is back up and running and doesn't look any the worse for wear. What a relief :)

Re this site. Please let me know if anybody would like me to work on a particular section of the "Files". Willing to download as much as I can then upload it again when we know where we are going to be.
Ciao for now, off to Newbury for the weekend :)

Keith has now everything in hand again, and thank you for all the offers of help. He will keep them in mind in case of needs in the future, but thinks that once our move to the new provider is complete all the hacking problems will have been irradiated.

So, is the plan still to move onto a sub-forum at the drome? Why aren't the two treated as equals in the hierarchy? Should we go for Discord instead? Or a separate forum service that we can run by ourselves? I don't mean to provoke anyone here, I'm simply posing the questions (and I'm sure they have already been thought through, and that I am a nuisance to everyone).

Realistically, the Aerodrome has enough bigger userbase to pay for the $2000/year cost of keeping the lights on, we don't. Had *I* been in Keith's shoes, I would have been starting merger plans long ago so that the databases could be merged as part of the move rather than "dump and rebuild from scratch."

This forum's immediate future is as backup comms for while Aerodrome 1.0 is taken down for its last backup, then everything here goes *poof* when Keith migrates and Aerodrome 2.0 goes live, Anchorage subforum to be added at an undetermined later time. (Again, if I were doing this, I'd be getting the Anchorage sections set up now and just making them read-only, so that once I had someone to do the raw-data work of remapping the database everything could just slide into its new home like it was always there all along. The problem with this is the tremendous amount of man-hours and thus labor cost required to re-map the unique database identification numbers of every user, section, subsection, thread and individual post into a new range *above* all current Aerodrome ID's, then merge the Aerodrome and Anchorage user accounts for us double-hatters.)
