    Default Creating named famous captains

    Possibly somebody has suggested this already;

How about creating a deck of cards to represent named famous captains and officers of the time for the various nations? By combining existing special abilities, such as those captains included with the HMS Victory and the USS Constitution?

Does anyone have some cards templates that could be used?

Hi Stian, Take a look at Oak & Iron on their Facebook page. They use Admiral cards that each have a unique set of advantages. Also maybe the Aces cards from Wings of Glory could be adapted.

You could use this entry in the files section as a starting point Stian.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

One thing I've considered is Ship Cards. Individual ships of the same class often had different sailing characteristics. Also, the amount of time in between cleaning a vessel's bottom would affect its handling.

    Rob.
Thanks a lot. Unfortunfately, this seems to be one of those strange files that I need to log in to download - only that I can never manage to log in.

I have now made some early attempts at house rules for famous captains. I made three generic house rules; Commodore, Flagship (replacing the useless optional rules from the rulebook) and Linked (somewhat "stolen" from WizKids Pirates). I have done some research about who commanded the various ships in the game in the Napoleonic times, as well as famous fleet Commodores. I have then linked the captains and admirals to their historic ships. This is only a beginning, but I found it quite fun :-)

The point cost for the Commodore equals 3 points per ship in the fleet. This is to symbolise that you can use a generic Commodore. However, when using one of the named famous Admirals, the point cost for the Commodore rule is incorporated into the point cost for that Admiral.

PS. I have updated so that Admiral Nelson is also linked to HMS Vanguard, as that was also his Flagship at some point.

PPS. The special rules for Captain Sir Richard Goodwin Keats is to commemorate his deed of passing through between the Spanish ships Real Carlos and San Hermenegildo with HMS Superb at the Battle of Algeciras, making the Spanish ships sink each other.

I would also add some obvious anti-exploit rules:

    1. If you have multiple Captains or Flag Officers (Commodore/Admiral) on the same ship, only ONE of each may use his abilities until killed, incapacitated or relieved.
    2. "Personas" - you may not have two versions of the same character in your fleet. (From one of my WK Pirates players who was trying to make it a challenge of getting every one of the endless variations of Captain Blackheart on the same ship and all active at once.) So you ma have the younger Capt. Nelson of HMS Agamemnon, the midstage Adm. Nelson of Cape St. Vincent, or the senior Nelson of Trafalgar, but NEVER more than one of them in the same game.

Totally agree with this! Very good and valid points!

Here's an updated version of the famous captains.

PS. My logic for the point costs, is that it should roughly represent the same points as those skills would, only slightly cheaper. Haven't yet played around with it to test, but I'm happy to take feedback :-) Perhaps the points should be upped a little, due to the Linked rule.

PPS. The suggestions from Diamondback will apply:

    1. If you have multiple Captains or Flag Officers (Commodore/Admiral) on the same ship, only ONE of each may use his abilities until killed, incapacitated or relieved.
    2. "Personas" - you may not have two versions of the same character in your fleet.
