Thread: What's on your Workbench for August 2022?

Default What's on your Workbench for August 2022?

It's been a busy gaming summer. I finally had enough 28mm privateers painted to participate in the 2022 Summer of Plunder Global Campaign sponsored by Blood & Pigment in partnership with Firelock Games, Tales of the Sail, The Plunder Den, and Timber & Sail. Essentially it involves playing games and submitting those games to Blood & Pigment. So, far over 1,000 games have been submitted. It didn't look like I'd be able to take part but I decided that I could use my Japanese Sengoku figures as proxies for the Blood & Plunder Iroquois list. Blood & Plunder is a skirmish game for the Americas in the 1600s, but they are extending them to the early 1700s. The focus was privateering games but it also includes wars with indigenous groups. For the campaign one usually chooses a faction. If you play solo, as I do, you can only submit a game for one side, but I decided to play two games each week - submitting one for Dutch Privateers and one for the Iroquois. So, I've been focussed on playing the games and painting up figures. I posted pics the tartana I completed - without sails (it now has sails - alas, paper ones - sorry Jonas and Chris). I'm now working on sloop which can be seen in the photos below.

Now - for the surprise, last weekend we attended a family wedding in Manitoba (4 hours drive from Winnipeg). At the airport on Monday I checked email to discover that I had won the monthly prize for participants who were new to the game. The prize consists of a sloop, 25 miniatures and an activation deck valued at $178 US. That was completely unexpected.

Still to be done is the write up of the AAR for my last 2015 campaign scenario which I played mid-June. OMG! How time slips by!

Some more photos of the tartana with paper (OMG!) sails. I was thinking I'd go with silk span, but trying out paper was a quick and easy way to go - plus I can always change them later. I am only partially happy with this attempt at paper ones - I was able to get a bit of a double billowing effect but I'd like to see if I can reduce the wrinkles. The sails are two layers of paper stuck together with diluted white glue and then painted with acrylic paints / acrylic ink washes. I'm also happy that the sails are very durable / tough. I think I can reduce the wrinkles by being more patient (i.e., letting the glued paper completely dry before applying paint / ink to the exterior and maybe just doing paint instead of an ink wash which has more water in it).

I did a lot of internet searching for what people have done and it seems to me that no solution is completely satisfactory. It's a question of what one is willing to accept. I suppose brass etched pounded into shape with an anvil and hammer would give shape and thinness but I'm not going there.

I have often contemplated small boat actions, and also boats in larger scales for the landing parties in my games, but got put off by the thought of needing to make and store scaled up terrain and fortifications for the land action.
Those do, however, attract my interest, and as for your sails you have made a good stab at them as well Paul.
    Thanks for posting these pictures.

Not quite the workbench, but I'm reading Osprey's "Great Lakes Warships, 1812-1815" to put up a review here. Maybe it'll spur me to get back to the hobby side of things a bit.

Terrain is my bugbear. With my miniature gaming strewn from Ancient Babylon through the Classical era to the Late Roman Empire, the Dark Ages, Crusades, Late Medieval, 16th & 17th Centuries, Napoleonic, American Civil War, Franco-Prussian War, WWI and WWII I need very flexible terrain. No way can I compete with those folks who are focussed only on Blood & Plunder. They have fantastic but very era specific terrain.

    And thanks for the rep.

    Good day Paul.
My own periods cover ACW, ECW, AWI, F&IW, in both 25 and 15mm, plus WOG I & 2 and SOG, so my special terrain is restricted to some WOG, but mostly Sails and AWI which also does for some F&IW.

It's a strange madness that afflicts wargamers.

So far my specialist terrain is focussed on Japan as it's pretty hard to make European structures look Japanese. But I'm waiting for some Caribbean stuff from 4Ground - ordered back in April but now just #200-ish in the queue.

Out of curiosity, what rules do you use for ACW? I've used Johnny Reb (v1-v3) and tried the author's last version, Across a Deadly Field. I have Pickett's Charge which I will give a go. I also have Fire & Fury, but, for some reason, I can't finish reading the rules - they put me to sleep and by the time I go back to them I have to go back to the beginning and start over because I've forgotten what I've read. No other rules does this to me. It's part about me and part about the writing style, I suppose.

Fire and Fury was chosen for us by Captain Kiwi when we first began and I have never varied from that format Paul. Some years ago I did await the introduction of their skirmish rules with baited breath but although when they finally emerged I was already heavily involved with Wings so I never really got around to trying them out. The almost pristine rule book still graces my bookshelf.

At the moment it's too hot to do any painting. But I have been printing off some terrain for Adeptus Titanicus.

This is why I keep to a laser focus: AAM(dead), WAS(dead), WGF, WGS, SGN. Not even the forthcoming "small ships" Sails variant or T&T.

Finished my last game of 'Summer of Plunder' campaign for Firelock's Blood & Plunder skirmish game. It did move my painting of stuff forward - got a tartana and sloop finished plus a few minis. However, it seems it's two steps forward and one back as I ended up with another sloop and more minis. I did use paper for the sloop's sails - not entirely satisficed so next time I will use silkspan (actually examination table paper). Will see how that goes. Some photos from the last games done this week.

For most of the campaign I used my Sengoku period Japanese for North American Woodland natives. I didn't quite catch up as you can see - natives and canoes are unpainted and I still needed 50% Japanese volunteers.

Nice looking ships. I see part of your painting queue there That does remind me I have a 15mm Sengoku project on my list.

Playing more Oak & Iron than B&P these days myself.

    Hi Eric,

If only it was just one painting queue....but it's several in parallel.

Yeah, like Paul said, too many parallel queues and hope that I can add to that Blood and Plunder: Raise the Black in the next two or three month, finally

They look very good Paul, and it has reminded me just how many strands I have on the go or like my Wars of the Roses Army just abandoned for ten years with the Yorkists completed and only two Lancastrian housholds started. The rest being ghosts in white undercoats.

I think I will resist the Raise the Black for a little bit - the fact that I am not part of the Kickstarter will help in that regard.

    Thanks for the rep, Rob.

Now that I'm retired it's what game do I play next that will determine which queue has priority - the potential games having already decided the priorities within each queue. Options are:

    1) Complete one unit of 28mm French infantry so that I have enough for my first Frano-Prussian skirmish game.
    2) Complete one unit of 15mm Louis XIV dragoons plus paint up another for a 1690's game of French vs Grand Alliance.
    3) Paint up a few odds bits of WWII Germans and Russians for a 1941 game of 'O Group'
    4) Build more 1/1200 17th century ships in anticipation of the full Mad for War rules being released.
    5) PAint more B&P figures - 9 Spanish militia on the go. Then build another ship and paint some long boats as well.

Probably that's the order things will be done

    Me too, Rob, me too!

I did make some good progress with the 28mm Franco-Prussian French plus a unit of Blood & Plunder Spanish Militia. I know the the latter is a lower priority but they were on my table looking at me and asking for paint. LoL
