Default Looking for a list of "nicknames" for British ships

    Dear shipmates,

I remember in a thread somewhere here in the forum a list of "nicknames" British saylors used for their ships. The only one I still have in mind is the famous "Billy Ruffian" for the HMS Bellerophon. But I think there was a list with round about a dozend of those nicknames.
I executed some searches via the forum search function without success.
    Can somebody help me?

    Thanks for that Dobbs.
It is a pity that most of the ships mentioned are post 1850 but you can find a few for our era if you look hard enough.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

    Hi Lankin,
thank you - This was the list I was looking for .

And also thank you for providing the additional links - normally I look up all my stuff on the internet, but for some reason I just forgot to ask wikipedia before starting this thread .
