Default What's On Your Workbench for February 2022

I finished the fort Château du Taureau this evening. I still have to mount some ordnance on top.

Most impressive Vol. You should add that to the showcase.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

Today I managed to complete the island city part of the fortifications, and cut out the outline of the foam cliffs and shoreline.
Please note the gap left where a set of wall steps will be inserted after all is glued in place. This is the fallback for fudging if the walls have any errors when fully assembled.
Tomorrow I hope to contour the hills.

Thanks Jonas. Did you take the chunk out of the side of that ship, or was it a misprint so you are making it a wreck?

I used pliers to take a chunk out. I had printed good, but I print more ships than I need for fear of misprints and broken lanterns. Now that I use "tough" resin and get more used to handling them I usually don't need to.

But I find it useful and looks well to have wrecks for the game table so I will make sure I have at least a few of most types.

    Thank you, Rob!

My plan is about 30 ships and perhaps 15 wrecks. 25 are just about ready for rigging but only 3 wrecks.

I printed out Henry's 17th century Gilded Sail wrecks in their original 1/600 scale to see what they looked like. I think you could do the same thing to our period ships by just slicing a portion of the hull below the plate line in various configurations.

I figured out the problem Rob. When I pulled up the Showcase I was logged out for some reason, when I had been logged in before I clicked your link. Once I did that I was able to start a post. However, when I tried to upload the 1st photo I got a notification that I did not have permission. Apparently I had been logged out again. I copied all that I had written then logged in again. I opened a post, pasted what I had copied and added the photos. What a chore!

Today I finished the terra forming and have now put diluted PVA all over the surface to seal it and also harden the surface prior to painting.
here it is with a few of the principal buildings where they will eventually be situated.

No Rob, I always keep it checked. This was weird. I was logged in and had just posted my query to Jonas. I decided to try using your link again directly to the fort showcase, to find I was no longer logged in. All is good now, since I figured out the problem.

Sadly the software is too “intelligent” and lifts any model that have any part below the plate and with that you instead get a failed print.

Also, I can’t see the last picture you posted. It’s disappeared like before.

I am using Cura 14.0.1 Jonas and it allows me to 'sink' any part of the model below the plate line. I have used the feature a lot to reduce or get rid of the bulky bases on some of the ironclads and ancient ships I print.

Both of my photos have disappeared it seems this morning Jonas. Here they are again

Well I put the two in a new album. The others that were already uploaded I could not drag to the album. And I couldn't figure out how to move them from the abum to the post. There is no url to copy. I use my android phone. I also noticed every one of my albums is corrupted.

You did a superior job of packing Vol. I may have been too careless when unwrapping them? Not to worry I have access to pieces I can use, either hand made or lanterns taken from some of the Warlord ships.

Certainly on the work bench for this month and the next few....just arrived in the post for some 17th century (and late 16th century) swashbuckling.

Reminded me that I have an order waiting to go to Ron sitting in my to do file.
    Thanks Paul.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

I've done some Langton ACW ships, but I was still surprised at how much smaller a 17th century sailing ship was compared to a mid-19th century one (100' or less vs 225' for the USS Hartford). After consulting the Great Oracle of Internet on metal or brass sails I went with brass. HOWEVER, once I started to look for internet tutorials on building a ship with those brass sails, GOI failed but it did point me to a post of yours. Good job there but I see it was an on-the-job training session for you.

You might have to wait, Rob. I think they'll be closed for March. On their notice board:

"ANNOUNCEMENT OF CLOSURE FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH: Carol hasn't seen her family for 3 years now. So she is taking the month off. You can send an order in for when she gets back."

Vasa, large, 72 gun ship, but not the largest vessel of the 1620s to 1630s, was ~150ft on the gundeck, and considerably longer overall (beak to taffrail ~200ft or very nearly).

Sovereign of the Seas (100) was of slightly longer length by the time of her 1688 rebuilding, and was at least as large as Vasa had been when launched (but a much more suitable proportion of beam and draught).

The length crept up slowly - the 1701 ship was ten feet longer on the gundeck, a growth repeated for the 1786 ship, bringing her to the same length as Victory (a relatively modest ship in the early C19th) at around 184ft on the GD,

The renamed 1833 Royal Sovereign was completed as a screw battleship in the 1840s as Frederick William and was 30 feet longer again, and of much stronger firepower, with auxiliary steam propulsion. (214ft on the GD)

For ship length I was thinking more along the lines of the ships in my order - ranging from a carrack, a Dutch pinas to a 60-gun Dutch ship which will be more typical of the ones I will be using in games and, hence, the ones I will be building. For reference here is a photo with the (unfinished) USS Hartford in the background, the USS Sassacus in the foreground with the carrack and Dutch 60-gun in between. All are Langton 1/1200.
