    It was obvious that both ships broadsides were weakening, and Bombay now tacked as Captain Smithers had determined to board the Frenchman. As Bombay came about she was able to use her still loaded Port side guns to rake the French Sloop which was seeking to cross her stern. The more powerful broadside guns successfully brought down one of the Sloop’s masts.

    The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.
