Thread: SPI Frigate Boardgame

    Default SPI Frigate Boardgame

I picked up a brand new, still wrapped, copy of the old boardgame Frigate at my favorite bookstore at a fairly cheap price. Has anyone played this game and what did you think of it?

I have -- it's simple enough one can do mass-combat, tho' one doesn't get quite the visceral thrill of watching ships come apart as one does in _WS&IM_.

Is it like this: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/594297/frigate ?

It's actually not a bad game, but you need to have the modifications that were in one of the issues of Moves to correct the problem with the small ships being totally impotent even against each other! The system uses hits to mark hull and mast damage with up to 3 hits of each being applied to achieve dismasted or sunk. There were crew hits as well, also up to max 3, prizes, movement by single ship or in formation, plotted movement using the famous SPI simove pads and a few other wrinkles but remarkably the rules are very short and there was a nice range of scenarios. As with all aos games the big battles can get tricky but the game was a lot of fun at the time.

It also had a variable firepower determined by range to target, I think there were three different ranges.
