Default What's on your workbench for April?

The expansion of my Poet into a major naval base started today with the paper templates to add the major fortification from Julien and its environs.

Here is the progress made today.

The base materials are laid out and drawn onto them go the patterns.
A new material for the base is used today. Foamed polystyrene called Palram.
It is less thick than my styrene foam and gives much lower cliffs as I want this fort nearly at sea level. For the hills in the background the old team of Plasticard and polystyrene will be used as per normal.
Palram is also great for building constructs and can be heat bent.

    Name: IMG_5939.jpg
Views: 551
Size: 143.8 KB

After cutting the Palram to rough shape, I cut a square slot into Julien's fort's outer-works and emplaced a gatehouse.

    Name: IMG_5940.jpg
Views: 534
Size: 150.3 KB

Once the styrene was cut I retried the pieces for fit with the shipyard, and popped the town houses on to see where they could go.

    Name: IMG_5941.jpg
Views: 552
Size: 132.4 KB

Finally today I cut the outer moat into the Palram with my router, and superglued the gatehouse into place.

    Tomorrow terra forming commences.

Not quite so much done today.
Cliffs roughed and terra forming as well.
Overnight I will try and get the outer works glued down to the base.

Today I finished off shaping the two base tiles and fitting to the already completed sections.

Then I Glued the rear tile to the foam base sheet ready for adding the beach.

    Today's work.
Once the glue had gone off it was time to brown undercoat the two bases.

Next I gave another layer of PVA and spread my grass and sandy beach material.

I then started to paint the base colours on the fort.

Looking exceptionally good Rob. It's a good thing my model railroad has space priority at this time. I might be tempted to do some work along these lines, but there's no room to spare.

Looks fantastic, Rob. You're working almost as fast as Dave's elves? Future AAR's will look extra special with that as a backdrop.

The Business of the commander-in-chief is first to bring an enemy fleet to battle on the most advantageous terms to himself, (I mean that of laying his ships close on board the enemy, as expeditiously as possible); and secondly to continue them there until the business is decided.

Damn fine work, sir! I love all the extra detail you have put into the harbor including the ship under construction on the slip.

Did you notice anything particular about the nearer ship in the wet dock Richard?

Brilliant work, Rob. The background perspective with the harbor is almost perfect. I don't know if you have local magazines for miniature wargaming, but these photos would be a wonderful series for modelers to check out.

I used to be in contact with Duncan McFarlane Editor of Wargames Illustrated, but when it got taken over in 2009 I lost interest. It did not seem to cater for my needs anymore.

I only picked up that magazine irregularly. At least we have your work here. Too bad others can't benefit from all of the work you and others have done in island building.

They sure can, but we need to let them know about it.

David, are you going to Salute this Saturday? I've read somewhere that someone is bringing a 1/200 scale USS Essex for a Warlords Blood Red Skies event? This is something I'd love to see.

Correction; not USS Essex, USS Hornet?

I'm not. Too many "real life" issues made it not possible. A pity as there's a new product based on one of my sets of air combat rules being released and I'd have liked to have been there for that. Maybe next year.

However, one of my friends is running a refight of Jutland tomorrow in the skittle alley of the local pub (the same place where I've suggested we could do Chris' Trafalgar game) so I will at least be rolling some dice tomorrow

What's the new product and sorry you can't make Salute? Good luck with Jutland and those dice rolls!

Apologies Rob for the tangential posts to your thread.

I suspect the number of interested wargamers coming here and seeing Rob's excellent work is greater than would see it in a "glossy". None of my local coven of wargamers have maintained their glossy subscriptions. It seems rather pointless given the wealth of material tat is out there on the internet - in places just like this :)

True enough. I've dropped all my magazine subscriptions with the exception of my N Scale model railroad mag. It's beyond niche in what it covers, and while some of the material might be online, this pub brings it all together in one spot every two months.

So my keen observation of natural phenomena must have slipped since I retired 3 years ago. I had to go back and look a second time. Very nice!

    No worries Jim.
You only have to look at some of my posts to see that I can't call the kettle black.

I do have a quick question for you that is related to this project. What are you using as the base for the San Luis fortress? It looks too thin to be the blue Styrofoam insulation. Is it some kind of tile? I'm seriously wanting to build something much flatter for Admiral Vernon's 1741 attack on Cartagena.
