Royal Navy Raid on Kingston, NY -- October 1777

A squadron from the RN fleet in New York harbor, loaded with British Army regulars sailed up the North River (now the Hudson River) toward Kingston, the first capital of New York. The raid was in retaliation for Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga, NY 90 miles north of Kingston. The raid resulted in the burning of Kingston (over 300 homes and buildings), what is referenced as a "brief naval skirmish" on the Roundout Creek (a feeder to the North/Hudson River) resulting in the loss of 36 gun and 30 gun U.S. frigates along with the destruction of a number of U.S. sloops and over 80 smaller vessels, and the capture of several U.S. forts south of Kingston in the area that was to become the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. I don't think even our landing at the seaport in Doncaster 16 did that much damage Chris!



Here you can just see the Armoury and Magazine on fire, but the ships on the stocks are not yet alight nor those morred in the outer harbour.
