Imagine the strain the recoil of one of those would put on a Frigates structure when it recoiled, never mind the space it would take up whilst inboard opposite another one from the other side of the ship. Sheer weight and ammunition would also play a part in the equation.
I suppose that the American super Frigates were an inevitable consequence of all this. If you wanted more clout, you had to go stronger and larger.
