    Default Maps

I'm considering writing some rules for campaign gaming and am looking for some good maps. The might potentially be board game boards or actual maps - looking to see what people may know of what's out there. I'm trying to find something that's nice and visually appealing. I may have to create my own, but hoping I might be able to find something that's at least a starting point.....

    Thanks!

Ryan, at one time I was tinkering with ideas for a line of campaign-books I was trying to sell to Ares--shoot me an email if you might be interested in comparing notes and pooling resources; after this long without them picking up the ball I'm starting to consider making a move and publishing it on my own if I can ever develop some of the required support mechanics.

Sounds like an interesting project DB.

You've already seen sneak previews of it, Rob, IIRC. :) But let's not hijack Ryan's post...

I'll see if I can find some of my sources for old USGS maps that might help with the Eastern Seaboard coastlines again. Canada doesn't seem to have been so good, though...

    Hey Diamondback,

Was away for a few days on a work trip. What I'm thinking is a campaign where you're actually sailing around a map, rolling to determine encounters. I wanted to bring more of a real feel to things, something where you start out as a post captain, on a sloop and have to work from there. I'm noodling over rules for how to approach, but basically it boils down to seeing what you run into, determining who has the wind - giving each side and options to "investigate" sails on the horizon, and then doing a comparison to see if there's an engagement. If so, you've got your SoG game - if not, you keep sailing around.

I'm working on different missions, like close blockade, far blockade, convoy escort, etc. It's still early on, but I've started drawing out a map. My thought was to start with the Caribbean, since there were a lot of "smaller" vessels in the Caribbean during the French Revolution period - so lots of sloops, brig sloops, and frigates - fewer third rate type ships. Would be a great place to start a career, and once you advance through the ranks, start to enable transfers to other theaters where more of the "big boys" play.

I know you have a preference for very historical stuff, so this may/may not be of any interest to you. It's also designed somewhat to enable solo play as well.

We're a bit on the same page :) --my vision for "Campaign Books" was something of a split, the overall theater map plus zoomed in "tactical maps" around key landmarks and historical battle sites. The pure-historical would be more scripted, but there would also be a free-form component with die-roll or double-blind "encounters," and add-ons like sealed mission-orders.

The goal is a sliding scale from just "this part of the world is your sandbox Open Season" at one end all the way to "Hardcore Historical" and a whole spectrum of options in-between--full-on Advanced-Plus-All-Optional-Rules Sails is frankly too complex even for me, so I'm thinking the baseline "Recommended" would be a stripped-down basic ruleset for tactical battles and more complicated Strategic and Resource Management turns in between.

I'm thinking something somewhat like that - but my main map I'm working on has a grid on it. Certain areas have a more "dense" grid which are where encounters are more frequent. Say for example around Havana or Cap Francois, which were major dockyards and ports in the Caribbean during the French Revolution, you'd be more likely to encounter ships. Versus say a grid sector that was out in the middle of the Caribbean.

It's not really a "tactical" map per say, but something slightly different for the more trafficked seagoing areas. My current thought is to leave the actual SoG playing area up to players, if you're in a coastal square, perhaps rolling a dice and on a 6 one edge of the board is coastal terrain or something. Any insight on the types of missions that could be undertaken? So far I've identified close/far blockade, convoy escort, military dispatch mission, cruising....I think that's most of what I have run across from a historical perspective thus far.

Never finished porting it over from original A&A:WAS format, but you can find the original 'Warspite's Sealed Mission Orders' and my attempts at translation at http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.p...pite#post39168

By 'tactical map' I was thinking the gameboard we play our standard games on, 'strategic map' would be your "zoomed out view" with grid squares. I wish I could find the old Kriegsmarine grid-map that came with my copy of Silent Hunter... that would be an ideal start point.

For something more "period," albeit Caribbean-centered, you might look to http://www.tdamap.com/portmap.html for inspiration.

    Hi Ryan.
Although the campaign with maps and bookkeeping is not really my thing anymore, having done several over the years, we do have a selection of scenarios, many of which are based on factual actions even if somewhat loosley which you can draw from.
They are here in the Solo missions section sub forums at the top of the page:-

Also if you read a biography, of Pellew or Cochrane you will find a plethora of ideas for a variety of actions.
