The nickname was given to him because as a child, when he played war with his brothers, he always pretended to be Frederick the Great, King of Prussia.
His supremacy lasted from 1777 to 1807, and at his death he was succeded by his stepson William Richards under whom "Prussia Cove" kept its reputation. Most of what is know about John Carter is a local tale. John and his brother became the leading Cornish Smugglers.
