I would certainly use Carronades if available to you Hugh. From my trials they certainly give you an edge, and for single ship actions the maths is not too strenuous.
Get nice and close, give 'em a whiff of grape and then it's boarders away.
You could also give her stats like the Amelia.

I have decided that captain Dixon spent his booty on replacing all of the guns with carronades. I'm going to have no long range firepower at all and go for 4/0 carronades!
