Default AAR And now for something completely similar.

My last mission included a brace of Frigates per side.
This time I was the Double Shotted British, but this time so were the French.

The french go for the divide and conquer ploy.

The Brits start to form line of battle in the good old traditional way.

The Brits get the line sorted.

Splitting the French, HMS Meleager opens with double shot on Unite, but both French Frigates reply with similar, and the Brits get the worst of it.

Terpsichore now comes into action and things look up for the Brits. Raking Unite and setting her on fire.she also Broadsides the reloading Courageuse.

Meanwhile Meleager with what she has left in firepower hammers Courageuse with her first double shotted Starboard broadside and rakes her stern.

Terpsichore and Unite also exchange fire from the Fighting tops.

This latter proves too much for Unite who promptly strikes.

Both Brits now set off in hot pursuit of the Courageuse.

She and Terpsichore exchange unequal broadsides doing almost equivalent damage.

Meleager and Courageuse collide but without entanglement.

However, the Brits do take some casualties from the Tops.

The remaining few guns also exchange a desultory volley without much real effect.

The battered Courageuse now makes a run for safety pursued by the faster Terpsichore.

Almost safe, but the pursuing Terpsichore comes about and her forrard guns deliver the Coup de grace to the Frenchman in the nick of time.

Nicely done by the British. It is a perfect example of why splitting your ships doesn't always work.

    thanks for the AAR.

I can't honestly say I was thinking that when Meleager took all that stick in the first exchange Hugh, but it did give Terpsichore a clear broadside without any real comeback, and that left it almost intact to finish the job. So yes, I guess it worked out alright in the end.

Thank you for reading it Dave.
Now we must get back to the serious stuff. Neither of us has posted a Nautical Beer for days. My throat's getting quite parched.

Tell you what Reg, I'll try and find another nautical beer today although we seem to be finally drying up on that thread too.

Well as you can't trust the water on these overseas stations beer would be most acceptable. Especially as you are still buying.

Just proves my theory that line is best! It allows double broadsides against foes on both sides as at Trafalgar!

My thoughts exactly Richard. Four shots for their two. You should win almost every time.

    I agree shipmates.
As with the real fleet actions, if you can prevent them from crossing your bows and raking you fore and aft, it certainly seems the best method of fighting a battle.

I really like that final picture. It looks almost like the sun is shining off of the ocean as the day draws to a close. Very thematic.
