Default What's new in your Harbour today.

I have just purchased two Sloops, HMS Swan and the French Alligator to nicely round out my fleets.
I Now have in both fleets 100(+) Gun and 74 Gun SoL, 2 Frigates and now a sloop.
I think that that will be that as far as new acquisitions go unless Aeres puts out something new that I can't resist.
What ships are you hoping to add to your existing fleets.

    I just got 2 3rds and 2 frigates for both British and French. That gives me 1x 1st, 3x 3rd, 3x 5th, 1x sloop for both nations.

That's probably all I'll get unles its the special ships.

Number clarification. See post #1 above.
    4 x 100 gun, 2 x 74, 2 x Frigate and now 1 x Sloop for each side, British and French.

Now you get in range of the thing called "fleet".

I still detect a lack of 3rd rates and frigates...

I still have 2 Hebe class frigates for my RN to do, HMS Amelia and her sister.
I, too, have more 1st and 3rd rates than a balanced fleet needs!

I am wanting a French 1st Rate, Montange, just to add a bit more firepower for my fleet.
Could do with a few sloops but cant bring myself to buy, I know a lot of people say the game is better as a frigate game, but I prefer the SoL

I am awaiting the imminent arrival of the Imperial from Keith having failed to pick it up at the last two shows where it would have cost me a mint from Caliver.

You can have too many 1st rates in my opinion. It's hard to have too many 3rd rates, though. I have 39 3rd rates but a few have been converted to Indefatigable, Agamemnon, Tonnants and so on... And two of them are wrecks.

In the case of the British Fleet more than five is too many. Although they had more than that during the period, they never had more than five or six at any one time during the whole period. What we need at the top ens are a couple of 90s. That would give us four in with the card back ones, there to support the 100 gunners.

I find that the 1sts are a bit of a blunt weapon honestly. They are huge and magnificent but really they have all of the grace of a floating fortress. Frigates are the real glory boys of the navy.

Can't say that I have used them much, but I can see your point Hugh.
It's really just that I try to get historically balanced fleets as far as I can even if most of them will probably never get to sea.
You just never know when the call will come for a show. "Oh can you do The Nile next month please."

    1st rates are aweseome.

Especially in a battle of the lines you can use them as flagships, formation leaders or division leaders.

Frigates are cool, but when grownups play they need capital ships.

I limited myself to 2x 1st rate per side (HMS Victory + HMS Royal Sovereign & Montage + L'Orient)

Don't worry Rob, I have too many of them too but I have a plan. They're going to be painted as Chesmas.

And by the way, they sail like barns. Except for HMS Victory that cheats. She sails like a third rate.

Having more 1st rates (I have 4 French and 5 British) just gives me choice, and for pick up games at the club, you can have what you like really!
I really think 74's and 60's are better as they add maneuverability to fair staying power, for the average game.
Frigates are ok now and again.

    First of June:
3 British first rates out of 25 ships of the line.
3 French first rates out of 26 ships of the line.

    Battle of the Nile:
No British out of 13 (14 counting the Leander) ships of the line.
1 French out of 14 ships of the line.

    Trafalgar:
3 British out of 27 ships of the line.
4 Spanish out of 33 ships of the line.

My five each of British and French will be more than enough for any battle. I still have the plan to buy another Victory and modify her a little to use as Royal Sovereign as it is a beautiful model. I would then make the Royal Sovereign I have into a Chesma and use as a Russian first rate. The Chesma is really a little late for the battles I would like to play with Russians, but it will have to do. There's not that many ships to choose from...

Now having enough of 74s for those battles... and sizes of 74s...
I'm dreaming of having all the ships to put the Nile on the table. Most models will be available with the coming releases.

Thank you for showing the relations, Jonas.

I have to check, how SoG will perform at Summer Con.

Depending on this, I maybe run a small Abukir sceanrio next year.

I have trouble commanding more than 1 ship at a time, assuming my little band at the club all want to play, I already have enough!

Won't stop me buying more though....

    Hi guys!

Although I've been a member for a few months now, this is my first post. I've played a number of games by now with a number of ship combinations and have been building my fleets on a squadron basis consisting of 1-100, 2-74s and 1 Frigate. Sloops are used as recon for campaigns and only see action against other slops and frigates.

For what it's worth, my "fleets" currently consist of:

    British: 100s-4; 74s-8; Frigates-4; Sloops-2
    French: 100+s-3; 74s-6; Frigates-6; Sloops-2
    Spanish: 74s-2; Frigates-1
    American: Frigates-1; Sloops-2

Personally, I would like to see at least another Spanish 74, as well as a 100+ along with another American frigate. As far as the Brits and French are concerned, I agree with the above statement, you can never have too many 74s...but a few 60+s, razees, brigs and merchantmen would really add gravy to the mix!

I personally prefer playing one ship per person but find that two is do-able. Any more than that, however...as we tend to use ALL of the rules (along with a few in-house additions)...not only adds complexity but also seriously slows down play. I enjoy the speed, flexibility and "adventure" of limited frigate/sloop (i.e., "post" command) engagements, but line battles seem to require many players to effect the same excitement.

    Mike

I love the Britannia. I have abused that ship in so many battles and it always takes what ever I throw at it and keeps going. It's the only ship I own that can weather the monsterous Ocean class ships.

Firstly welcome to the Anchorage Michael.
You seem to be well advanced with your ship building programme.
Rest assured that the other rates of ship are in the pipeline, or should I say shipyard at the moment.
I got an extra Spanish 74 by a spot of repainting to produce the Neptuno. There are other ships in the class you could do as well.
Word on the harbour wall says that there are more large Spanish ships on the stocks.
May you sail with a fair wind.

    Well done Kristian.
A very good choice. I eventually got two starter sets just to get enough spare chits and so-forth. This was before the accessory packs were announced, but I don't regret it.
With a couple more 74s and a three decker, you can cover most of the scenarios on the Anchorage.

In this Monday, my fleet increased by French 1st rate Ocean class Imperial/Republique Francaise. Magnificent and powerful ship.
In the previous month I invested money in two great ones: Royal George/Hibernia and Le Berwick/Le SwiftSure. Fantastic looking models.
So adding to this core set, now my fleet consists of seven units. In the future maybe Montagne and Victory (as finances will allow).

I have finished the base rigging on three 1st rates, 2 British and 1 French, using the brush bristle method.
The extra support have greatly stabilised the masts on these making them less prone to breakage.
I will post pics later today (once I finish work).
Only now need ratlines so I can finish off the rest of the rigging.

Cheers Rob, I am hoping to pick up my second Montange at the Games Expo in June, that then will be enough untill the Spanish etc arrive, unless I see a couple of cheap Aligator sloops. Just not prepared to pay £15 plus for a sloop

As promised earlier, here are a couple of pics showing the rigging of three 1st rates using the bristle method

All these now are very sturdy despite the flimsy mast, so if you can I recommend putting at least a couple of rigging lines on these ships to stop any breakages.
All these are , is bristles pulled from a black nylon brush, cut to size and glued to the masts and the fighting top.
If anyone would be interested, I can try doing another step guide like The Royal Hajj showed a while ago.

For me that seams to happen only when I put on a battle at a convention and then I'm not even playing myself.
Hard to have the space and people available else.

    Ah! Yes shipmates.
One day I will have all my ships of the line in battle.
Only when that day will be I have no idea, but it is a dream to cherish.
    Bligh.

What ships are you hoping to add to your existing fleets.
OK I lied. I also have two 64's, one British one French, which I had overlooked.
    Apologies

Now I just have to plan it's layout and try different buildings so it could be southern France, southern Baltic or wherever else you may have a naval base and sandy beaches.
