Default Once upon a time in England

It was in 1991 when the sister of my schoolfriend refused to give her parents and her brother a company for a 2 week caraven trip through England & Scotland.
So they asked me to come with them.

This was in late July or August. I was 15 years old.

One place we wanted to see was the city of Portsmouth and so we had a view on the ships and dockyards there…

    This is the HMS Warriors.

Of course you know this ship, so I show only a picture of the bow.

Another HMS ? behind this ironclad dreadnought .

A Royal Navy aircraft carrier was there, too. HMS ?

I was always fascinated by the uncommom staring ramp at the bow of those British aircraft carriers...

Three RN submarines were at another military section of the docks.

We grabbed the chance to visit an older one from inside. HMS Alliance.

When we went for the car we recognized some “official action” with policemen, big limousines, etc…

Military personel arrived on the scene.

Noblemen/ -women and official representatives of the city. Something was going on here!

We decided to wait and sometimes later the Queen herself left the ferry building!

A gentle smile for the representatives, own people and the tourists.

She waved goodbye and left the scene.

…but. We saw her again very soon. Obviously she was leaving Portsmouths in a small convoy.

First there was a kind of supply ship. Trinity House Vessel "Stella".

Then the Royal Yacht. HMY Britannia.

You can see her majesty on the rear upper deck in her blue clothing. (You need to look very sharp)

At last the her guard in form of a RN warship. HMS Avenger.

It was a memorable moment of our trip to England.

Sometimes you have nice encounters by chance.

The frigate was HMS Avenger, pennant number F185.

My favourite of the Type 21s

I believe the submarine would be H.M.S. Alliance. It is still there.

Those are great photographs, considering their age.

    Thank you.

I took those pictures in the age of analog SLR pohotography.

England and Scotland are very beautiful.

This year in September I'll go to Japan with this old school buddy.

No families just he & me. Reviving old days of commom travel.

If another earthquake, Tsunami or Godzilla strikes the land of the rising sun - our alternate target is good old blighty.
