Default Oh to be, upon the sea, aboard HMS Trincomalee!

Yesterday, I want down the coast to see HMS Trincomalee at Hartlepool!

She is the oldest floating RN ship, and is a Leda class frigate. She has been refurbished to something like her original state, with a few odd errors. There are 12 pdrs on the quarterdeck rather than 9 pdrs, but as the guide said, you just can't get 'em nowadays!

The tour is on my blog at: http://herkybird-richardbradley.blog...incomalee.html

What a tremendous resource! I did not know HMS Trincomalee still existed. Great pictures in your blog, Richard!

Here is the website link for the ship from your blog. I think that others might like to visit the site. http://www.hms-trincomalee.co.uk/

Liz and I had a quiet weekend away near there a few years back and visited the ship. As you say, she's lovely and the setting in the wider museum is perfect.

The ideal location for a naval wargames weekend.......

In light of an earlier post on the Anchorage Eileen and I are planning a weekend up at Whitby in the Spring sometime, and were intending to pull in a day at the Museum, but we had no idea that it was so extensive Richard.
    Thanks for the extra insight.

I was surprised how much there was to do and see, and the staff were lovely!

They have done a really good job on the restoration and the recreation of the port facilities. I came home with a trinket made from original teak from Trincomalee rescued during her restoration.

    Happy memories!

Yes indeed Rich, but I never managed to blag a bit of the Victory when they were refurbishing it.

I always fancied that brass plate on the quarterdeck Rich, but it is not contemporary with the action despite what it says about Lord Nelson tripping over it.

Its funny, I have never fancied going to see Victory, now, had a 74 been preserved I wouldn't need to be press ganged on board!

    That's a pity Rich.
Apart from the obvious fact that it is geared up to one event on one day in October 1805 there is a wealth of detail to enjoy, and really to be a perfect philistine it is only a stretched 74 with an extra deck laid on.

I have to go visit her, I see. I wonder when that will all be. I have an appointment with a whisky barrel to bring back home this year. Perhaps I should bring the car and take a longer visit driving around the whole island and neighboring island... Trincomalee, Victory, Bruichladdich...

I happily spent 3 1/2 hours wandering round Hartlepool Marina - and could have stayed longer! If Victory et al are as immersive, you could spend a week looking them all up!!!

    Sounds like fun!

If you are coming over for an extended visit Jonas do let us know. Maybe we can meet up somewhere. Neil and I often do this with pilots on the Drome who visit Blighty. Don't forget if you do Victory there is also the Mary Rose to see.

Thank you for the offer, Rob.

We'll have to see. I need to figure out how to get a couple of hundred bottles of whisky into Sweden.
