So a polite request to himself will undoubtedly get you a warm welcome, and all you need to know about starting.
Most of us start with the Basic rules, and only move up the scale once we are comfortable with that. Handling several ships on AI alone can be a big challenge to begin with, without taking on extra new rules.
Go at your own pace enjoy your experience, and the rest will come in time.
This also goes for your write ups. Don't try to be an Alexander Kent, or C.S. Forester. Just KISS. Read plenty of background books, and gradually you will gain in confidence and fluency.

I played a solo one on one last night to get a hang of AI movements which seemed to go fairly smoothly, tonight I plan to try two on two and see what happens.
