Indeed! - these are rather touching to read. It certainly emphasizes the importance of frigates to a large war fleet, that being they are the eyes and ears of the commander in chief.

    Thanks for that Neil!

This from the Battle of Trafalgar:

    PRIVATE DIARY.

[Autograph, or facsimile Copy, in the possession of Philip Toker, Esq.]

    Monday, October 21st, 1805.

At daylight saw the Enemy's Combined Fleet from East to E.S.E.; bore away; made the signal for Order of Sailing, and to Prepare for Battle; the Enemy with their heads to the Southward: at seven the Enemy wearing in succession. May the Great God, whom I worship, grant to my Country, and for the benefit of Europe in general, a great and glorious Victory; and may no misconduct in any one tarnish it; and may humanity after Victory be the predominant feature in the British Fleet. For myself, individually, I commit my life to Him who made me, and may his blessing light upon my endeavours for serving my Country faithfully. To Him I resign myself and the just cause which is entrusted to me to defend. Amen. Amen. Amen.

What a line - and may humanity after Victory be the predominant feature in the British Fleet.

    Thanks, Neil.

Should provide a great reference point for adding details to our AARs.
Even the structure of the letters is interesting.
Thanks for coming up with this Neil.

As an adjunct to Neil's letter by Nelson, I came across this painting whilst researching my Ares ships.
I had not seen this one before, although it may be familiar to many shipmates.
I felt it might be worth posting.
It depicts Victory, Temeraire and Neptune as they approach the Franco-Spanish Fleet at Trafalgar.

    That's a lovely painting, Rob.

I would hate to think what it would be like receiving a series of those broadsides.

Very nice painting but it's in the old mustard yellow and not the researched terra cotta or what ever they call the new pinkish colour.

    Trouble maker

But I have noticed that when some cameras take pictures of white in low lighting, the white comes out as a very light shade of pink.
Don't know if its the same for light yellow

The Victory mini's courses are much higher than the ones in the painting. Anyone have a thought on this? I have thought about shortening the masts to get them closer to the deck...

Not seen that picture before Rob, very nice, I so want a Temeraire in my fleet, but goodness knows when Ares wil give us a Brit 2nd rate. That will be far down the pecking order.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if some other paint detectives come to a completely different conclusion in a few years

That is a lovely painting, Rob. The beauty and power of those vessels are both displayed.

Well I just felt that if I were going to have any painting on my Lounge wall it would be that one.
I thought you may all like it.
