I find the movement with the cards tricky especially when they are close in with other ships.

Perhaps the use of plastic segments i.e like a tangerine could be used. The plastic segments can be placed
    in front of the ship.

    Welcome aboard, Laddie

Try placing ship cards were the ships should be and use them to make the move. Now replace the ships on top of the ship cards. There, a move in a crowd without any fuss or muss. (the Hallelujah Chorus)

    Good luck and happy sailin',

    Welcome aboard, Grasp.

We're glad you joined our crew.

I think all of us struggle at times with movement when ships are in very close proximity. I have gotten to where I eyeball what I think would take place in terms of collisions, for example, to keep the game moving. Somewhere around here, I have a photo of a ruler we made to measure close range and grape/chain due. It helps, too, when ships are gathered close to each other. I will find it and post for you.

We have a solo set of rules and campaign going. Please check them out at your leisure: http://sailsofglory.org/forumdisplay...-Solo-Campaign

Greetings Grasp! Welcome aboard the Anchorage!

Check out Sven's card solution for collision checks. I think it would also work just as well for those tricky move situations you've mentioned.

I guess I should also welcome you aboard Me Hearty, on behalf of the U.K. crews.
Do pop along to the U.K. fleet sub forum and introduce yourself to the other hands. You may even be able to blag a tot or two.

I love this ruler. It is so easy to drop down amongst ships and measure.

I like it a lot. Would it work with rigged ships?

I would think so. The nice thing is that you can drop down and spin into position. If the ships are too close for use, you have your answer already regarding range.

If you try with rigged ships, Rory, I would appreciate hearing your thoughts.

You will find it gets easier with practice, sometimes it just needs a little judgement decision of best guess.

    Eric, Rob,
I think this is a to do list thing. Useful One could make it different for different rules.
Steve can I ask why the coat of arms of Portsmouth?

Sue and I were talking about this the other day. I have several games for which I would like us to make these types of rulers, and for some, to make the measuring part even thinner. Thin would help for determining firing arcs as well. As we make them, I will post pictures.

Sounds as if we are into an area where Keith could be an asset once again for those who can't make their own Eric.

I'll talk with Sue and see if we can make a few versions of the ruler using different materials, and post pictures, accordingly. She, currently, has a few projects going, but I will do the design, thinking, etc., and pull her in at the end for construction help (if needed) and photos. If I can do the construction, anyone can. I know I must rank among the least talented here for any type of modeling skill.

    Sounds like a great idea.
You sell yourself short, however, when you suggest your skills in modeling are that bad.

No false modesty here, Rob. Even when I was in the military as an electronic warfare technician, my speciality or talent was learning the theory of operation and not the actual technician work. I was more able to discuss the problems in theory, trying to identify the problems in my mind, than I was using the oscilloscopes, tweaking things, etc. This is one reason I became I teacher - I can't do.

How about using model spur's. I have lots laying around. I'm sure I could find one that would work. Cutting it length of your short range and cutting off the odd short spurs bit's that stick-out which you don't need.

That's a good idea, Rory. Model spurs would work fine, I would think, as long as the plastic is rigged enough to not bend/warp.
