    Default Origins 2016

    Hello Folks,

Sue and I have been talking about next year's Origins. We want to start preparing much earlier as we desire to incorporate more 3-D terrain. Below are some ideas for scenarios. Any thoughts you have that could enable us to run successful games would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Here are my thoughts for potential games:
    • Pirate: this one would be more of an attraction than anything historical. Having played in Neil's Taranto game, I saw how much fun it is having the players play together against the table. I thought in this game, Sue and I would run a trio of first rate pirates, with the players ganging up on us. We (Sue) would paint three ships along the lines of Jim's creations. I would bill this as a family-fun game with the hopes of bringing in younger players and their parents.
    • Attack the Island Fort: I would place a fort in the middle of the table with 360-degree battery coverage. A couple of players would sail for the fort's side, with everyone else trying to blow the fort away. With a couple of players sailing for the fort, it would provide static and dynamic targets for the players. Wind would definitely play a role as players navigate around the island.
    • Merchants: a run for the table's edge game in which the convoy tries to exit under the protection of escorts, while the interceptors try to capture as much as possible - points would be distributed based on sinking, capturing, etc.
    • Small-ship Action: to be determined - possibly a river engagement, attacking a port, something on a lake or shoreline with many little islands creating narrower passages

I will only be running four games next year to free up a bit of time to play and visit. I think some such lineup as above would be attractive to players, especially those who would like to play multiple games, each one being a bit different.

Again, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I'd be more than happy to bring along my pirate island on the off chance I make Origins next year? You'd be welcome to use it in any capacity you'd like. As for suggestions I'll keep my eyes open at Gen Con this year to see if some ideas pop up. There is a group that does larger scale sailing engagements so I'll be sure to check them out.

    Thanks, Jim.

As long as you are aware that compared to Gen-Con, Origins will be small, relaxed, hassle-free, full of polite people, everything being within minutes of each other, great food place a minute's walk away, wonderful cider in the bar, and have the gang from the 'Drome and Anchorage lurking about, you will be fine. I just don't want you to get your expectations set too high only to be dashed against the rocks when you find you can actually register for events and a hotel room.

I got a very good idea of what Origins is like via several vlogs up on YouTube. It has many advantages over Gen Con. Being able to find a downtown hotel being the major plus and getting into events another. Even so, Gen Con is a spectacle I don't want to miss as so many new games are announced and/or released there each year. Indianapolis seems very happy to have the hordes there as well. I'm not sure how Columbus feels towards gamers, but I do remember Milwaukee being less than appreciative to the crowds of attendees.

Oh, and I see the crew that does sailing at Gen Con was also at Origins. http://blog.sailpowergame.com/

I want to take the plunge into origins next year, so I would be happy to play any or all of these!

Charles, you're more than welcome to join us in the fun, and we do have fun. Origins is a wonderful time - large enough to have significant gaming variety, small enough to have a relaxed and accessible atmosphere. It is about 15,000 people, and there are many from the 'Drome who room together in the hotel connected to the convention center.

Do you have any desire to run games? I am running the four above on Thursday and Saturday. That leaves Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday open for SoG games. PM me if you are interested in running anything.
