Thread: Ship's Cat

  1. #1

    Default Ship's Cat

It seems a few us here have cats aboard our "ships." Cats were an important part of the ship's crew through history. Here is a pretty good link on the subject:

Here is our latest. she goes under imaginative name of "Tiddles" (although I wanted to rename her Adele because she has agreat voice, looks smashing in black and is, to quote that fashion hag bloke, "a bit fat" :) )

As well as our own cats we foster homeless cats for the local moggie protection charity. We've had eleven in the last few months, all of whom have found new homes.

    Thanks Bobby.
The Black one is mine. He turned up on the doorstep about three years ago as a stray. His name is Salem after the cat in "Sabrina the teenage witch".
My son named him and it also ties in with our re-enactment period well.
Sooty, (Look at his nose) is one of my son's rescue cats, who is staying with us whilst Stuart, my other son is away working and living in a flat. His other cat Fluffy, who is Sootys brother, is camera shy but I will post one of him later.

She looks lovely in her "Tuxedo." (We call cats with the black and white color pattern Tuxedo Cats, not sure if you do across the pond)

she's taken to sleeping in my study, on the wargames table in amongst the piles of stuff that's dumped there just now, or on the seat at my painting station. She was surrounded by my kid's Warhammer 40k models this morning (but looked like she would have given them a run for their money :) )

They are brothers from cat rescue. No one else wanted two so my son had them both.

My three in the picture were all "adopted." The black one was kept from an abandoned litter (The others were also found homes). The Blue Point Himilayan was aquired as a kitten by a family member who decided later they did not want him. After "baby sitting" him a few times, I took him in. The Blue Point Siamese was from an animal rescue organization with a health problem. He is quite healthy now.

That was very amusing Dave. I have sent it on to all my catty friends.

This may be new to some of you. If you like it try Simon's cat on You Tube.

    Simon's Cat is awesome!

But, bad news. I got home tonight to find that Tiddles has got out and is nowhere to be seen :( We have left the cat flaps open for her and scoured the neighbourhood but no sign so far :( :(

Sorry to hear about Tiddles, but they do have a habit of turning up again.
Salem usually comes in at around 10pm. but he will sometimes do an all nighter about twice a year.

If she's like my cats, she is in a spot where she can't be seen but can watch you looking for her.

She's back - Laura found her hiding under the car on the drive and managed to grab her. She is now back inside, and has celebrated her return by jumping into a box of ship models I'm working on for a friend and smashing them up :)

Good to hear Dave, but not so good on the ships front. I think the Engineers cuddle punishment is in order here after the inquisition of what happened.

Or soy milk; that's big in the States, even with non-lactose intolerant people.
I thinks that's what's in "Cat's Sip" and "milk" that cats can drink, and frozen doggie treats.

How do you tell the black ones apart from one another?

  41. #41

Bob I counted one ring in there, is that a brown amongst the "sea" of black cats or just a lighting effect?

Yes you are correct there is one other than black. However he is gone since that picture was taken. I can tell them in different ways. They are from two different litters for them same mom. Dad was black also. One litter was two. One was born with three legs. The second litter there were 6 and each has a distinctive trait like fur or voice. One in this goup has three legs due to breaking it so it could not be fixed so rather then put him to sleep had it amputated. You would never know the way he runs around (his name is Redman). They are good cats.

I didn't know that entire litters of black kittens could be produced. I've always seen them in mixed litters. Mine was in a litter with a white and black and three grey tabbies.
