She's far from finished. The painting has just begun and she'll be rigged before finished, but I said I'd be working on her tonight so I posted the pictures anyway.

Looking fantastic Jonas! Just a quick note, if you're going for M&C SURPRISE, don't forget she has a little red stripe, just above the rigging boards on the gunwale, that runs the entire length of the outside hull. Did it with mine, wasn't too bad. HMS ROSE sure is a beauty, would love to sail on her. Oh, and also a flat white figurehead.

    Thank you very much.

As I wrote I've just started painting her so far. It turns out I wasn't really that happy with the look so I'm still modifying her...
So far I've added another gun port aft, moved the main mast a little forward (it's not glued in place yet) and I need to heat the bowsprit and try to straighten it a bit by bending it a little upwards.

Paint-wise I'll fix the masts, both the yellow and paint in the black rings, touch up the yards, sails, add the red stripe, gold framing on the stern, touch up on the windows and yellow lines, the figurehead, and probably more.

But thank you for the remainder.

And if said ship was to win great battles, (rig the rules where necessary), then you might even be encouraged to do further battle and win further glory for her name!!!

I didn't take pictures of the actual work, but this is the plan I had.

I kept the guns from the middle part, drilled the rear-most gun ports and cut them more square with a hobby knife.

Other thing I did was adding boats with the stern of the biggest of the ship's boats cut off.

    Cheers Jonas.
On the strength of that I have also ordered Embuscade, to convert into a chubby little Merchantman. At worst I will end up with a couple of sinking ships for my AAR's.

Hmm... I think I have one of those I can use too from one of my three starter sets.
When I made one of those into a pirate I didn't want it to have royals so I exchanged the main mast for a mizzen from my converted téméraires. I have it in my mind that merchants didn't use royals until later. I have no source for that, though.

I will check my pictures Jonas, but I don't remember seeing my Indiamen with Royals either.
It looks as if Hermione is the same sculpt as the one in the starter set.

Great! Then I will see if that's just me or if it's true.

Yes. Hermione is Courageuse and Embuscade is Terpsichore.

I have just looked at all the Indiamen pictures I have and it is a mixed picture. It would seem that the smaller merchants had Royals, whilst the larger ones did not. However, this is just what would seem to be the case from a few examples.

Yes, my memory was that was a way to know if a ship was a navy ship or merchant. If it had royals set it was a navy ship, otherwise you didn't know. I think that would apply mostly to indiamen or bigger merchants trying to look navylike.

I think it was more a question of mast size and crew rather than a "navy vs. merchant" thing. Large Indiamen used royals, and in later years even more types of sails at the upper reaches of masts (I think 7 was the upper limit, the topmost sails being skysails and moonrakers

But that must've been post war. That's more of clippers, isn't it?

I would think it would depend on crew size and during the wars I would think most would be recruited into the navy by most nations.

Just one other question if I may Jonas?
What font do you use for the titles on your ship base cards.
The Surprise looks better than the one I am currently using.

I have to check tonight, but it's one mentioned on this forum somewhere. It's not the correct version of the font but it's the same name at least. I scale it to compress it to make it closer to the version it should have been.

Once again I must thank you for leading me in the right direction Jonas.
After your mentioning that there was a thread, i did a search and came up with this:-

    http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.p...ighlight=fonts

It looks very much as if the font is actually Bondoni Classic condensed plus to me.
    if not it's close enough.

Yes. That was it. I only have a Bodoni that is too wide so I condense it manually.

    Glad to help out!
