    Default What brig?

Having my desk back I had to work a little on a project before tidying up the whole apartment.

I've still not seen any rigged sloops or a conversion of a sloop to a brig so I thought I would show kind of both.

So, what brig do you think it is?

    Looks like a Danish ship.

No idea what brig this is.

But it's HMS Speedy of course! (or Sophie for you Aubrey fans) She's got a quarterdeck and is under her false danish flag.

I'm not really happy with how the jib turned out. I should have cut into it more. It would have been better to use frigate sized jib and spanker but I had the ones I used from leftovers form the wreckage, from making Tonnants.

The good thing about having the big spanker is fitting in with my flag exchange program.
I can exchange all homemade flags on my first and third rates.

I'm not sure which ensign she did use but here she is under her own flag.

It turned out I made a mistake.

It's not HMS Speedy that was the visual model for HMS Sophie in the books, just the actions. The model would rather be HMS Vincejo, or Vincey Joe as she was called.

Don't you think this flag is a little bit small as well for a brig?

    This size should fit.

I made the Danish flag especially for her but the British I just took one of those I have for the 74 gun ship of the line.
I probably will have to make one especially for the little brig.

I can say that most of my ships of the line could be either French or British or any other nation that paints their ships like that or have an older/newer version of their flag put on them for that big battle. There are some (most I'm afraid) first rates that still have the old flagpole. I'll probably remove those too further down the line. It's not like those indistinguishable from the other side's.

All the frigates so far have their flagpoles still or a a very select few have had a flag made for them.

And by the way... Funny how that standing rigging looks to be massive on a model that's that small.

    Ah, ok.

Otherwise the brig looks like a provocation ship, maybe to lure some French frigates out of the Harbour of Toulon.

Well once again, I'm taken aback by your talent Jonas. So you made your ships flags interchangeable with double looped string? You wild man you! Nice! How's the Surprise coming along? Great job buddy!

Mark, I cannot see any... I think it turns up immediately, so something probably went wrong.

That's a relief Paul. You had me worried for a while there. Think what it could do to my prospects of commissions or promotions!

    Great job, Jonas!

I've picked up a couple of the Ship-Sloops to make into brigs but had a couple of concerns and haven't done so yet.

The first was where do the masts go? Now resolved since I just ran across an Illustration in "Nelson's Navy - The Ships, Men and Organization 1793 - 1815" by Brian Lavery, page 53, that shows a Snake/Cruiser class ship. It was designed to be either a three-mast ship or two-mast brig. It shows the placement for both sets of masts.

Yours look to be spot on.

My other concern is the masts themselves. Has anyone come up with a good way to move the masts without reducing the height? My cutting skills are not that great, and I'm worried I'll reduce the mast height significantly.

Anyone been able to remove the masts without cutting? If not, what is the best way to cut them and reaffix them without loss of height?

    Again, great job Jonas.

I used a scalpel-looking hobby knife and cut as close to the deck as possible. I then drilled through and cut off a piece of the mizzen mast's base to add to the foremast as the two masts should be quite similar in height on a brig and the fore mast went from on the forecastle to the deck. The lowest black ring hides the splice.
