    Default USS Constitution Repaint

When HMS Victory and USS Constitution arrived I thought they both deserved some special attention; rigging and ratlines at least and probably some repainting. As it turned out I focused more on the masts and deck than the hull itself so that's original. I did chop off the spritsail and then added a boat in back. I've gone back to Langton ratlines as they're less fiddly to apply and more durable for actual game play. Unfortunately, due to the scale difference even the 3D Langton ratlines aren't large enough to reach convincingly up the masts. So I took some extra ratlines and cut them down to fill in as futtock shrouds (I think that's the right term?). It goes a long way to disguising the shortness of the ratlines themselves.

I've got some pennants and flags coming from Waterloo Minis so I'm not completely finished, but I thought I'd toss up some pictures just the same. Photo quality is not the best as I didn't set up the entire light box, etc. I'll take better shots when she's done. Cheers!

Excellent job indeed! I like that you put the stern boat on as it was characteristic of American frigates.

If memory serves I got them from the GHQ model of the Santisima Trinidad. A one point some months back Vol determined that you can order accessory packs from GHQ that includes boats and anchors. I'm not sure that's still possible?

Yes futtock shrouds is the correct term and they do the job well.

Thank you Paul. I put the images up on this thread, but haven't put them in the files section. I wasn't exactly sure how to do that plus I wasn't sure they were quite good enough to share. I'm still learning how to use Corel. I have no background in photo rendering work so what I did is pretty crude.

Thanks, Jim! Sadly my attempts at doing something as simple as changing the Ship's name on a card have all to often been met with the desire to throw my laptop against the wall!!

Fortunately I have restrained myself from doing so, and just keep trying till I get it figured out! It would be even more difficult to explain to the wife why I need to replace my laptop every week or so!!

Flags are made by Langton Miniatures in the UK, but I purchase from Waterloo Minis here in the US. If you cant find them via a web search I'll put up a link for you tomorrow.

Neat stuff! A couple of questions:

    1. Didn't they wash their sails back then?

    2. How did you mix or buy the color you used for the sails?

Thank you, Reg. It's the pride of my fleet right now. I really should try to finish up some of the sister ships, but I've been in a lazy modeling mode as of late.

I know exactly what you mean. I've got loads of stuff that I should be working on but just can't drum up the enthusiasm to get started.
Oh well. Let's get Christmas out of the way and then I can perhaps make a New Years resolution to get the painting going again.
But then we all know what happens to N Y R's!

Reg, I think there are many of us who have an ever growing collection of to-be-painted items. Life wasn't notified that we have hobbies which need attending. Hopefully, with break rapidly approaching, games will be played, books will be read, and models will be painted. I recently ordered a dozen Vals that were on clearance sale; I want three sets of four in different paint schemes. I have some ACW ships calling me as well.

I know exactly what you mean Eric. I bought 12 Mitsubishi A6M2 Reisen ( for under £4.00/$6.00 each) about 2 years ago and my plans, similar to yours, for them are still unfulfilled.

Thank you all for the recent comments and the rep! It's definitely appreciated!

@Bob. I just now noticed your question, so sorry for the delay in answering. If I remember correctly I used 'Bone White' for the sails. It's one of the model paint colors from Vallejo. I often use it for the decks as well and then go over that with a light brown wash.

    Brilliant job, Jim!
What method did you use to paint the sides white without getting the paint all over the cannons? Or did you paint the cannons afterwards black again?

Thanks Richard. If I remember correctly I didn't do more than touch up the white and black coloring details. I think the white carried too far up and down on the hull so I covered that up with flat black. Then sealed the ship with a matte finish.

lol. Sorry, I misunderstood. OK, for the Pennsylvania I painted the hull stripes white to start. Then went back with a sharpee/black ink pen to color in the black hull planking between the white hull stripes. I finished it all off by repainting the cannons wherever white paint slopped over.

The build thread is here: http://sailsofglory.org/showthread.p...t=pennsylvania
