Looking at it in more detail this would make a very interesting research project to develop the kind of ballistic penetration tables that we enjoy today for current rounds, fragments and structural/ballistic protection materials. Ideal for someone with a decent instrumented range, access to a variety of naval ordnance of the time, shipwrights well versed in the art of construction techniques of the late 1700s and early 1800s, some decent FE analysis and a shedload of money.
