Default Test Game of Battle of San Domingo

This is not really a full after action report, but rather a few pictures from the test game of the battle of San Domingo.

It ended with HMS Superb struck, French frigates got away, Imperial and Alexandre stuck on sandy seabed and the rest of the French struck their colors. HMS Atlas also got stuck maneuvering too close to the beach.

The game looks outstanding. The town and coastline provide a real visual interest and act well as a backdrop. I thought they would, but with the ships deployed on mass I'm even more impressed.

What is the Order of Battle for the engagement? Do you plan to use the standard rules? What scenario rules apply?

Coast is the northern edge of the map. Wind blows from the south. French ships of the line starts by raising anchor on the first turn. Frigates can't get stuck close to the shore, but ships of the line get stuck on a draw of crew damage from E. Collision regardless does 1 B damage. I will use boarding.

During the test game all but one player hadn't ever played before and on the convention I'll have drop in learning battles the day before the battle and in the same morning and therefore raise the level to use advanced and some optional rules. Now I used a mix kind of based on standard.

Thank you for the order of battle. It made interesting reading with some variety from standard models. As I'm trying to understand how others put together display games I have another couple of questions...

Firstly, did you make up special ship cards with the various names? I suspect that is what you have done with the ship mats, but not so sure about the ship models themselves.

Secondly, the French ships of the line are anchored into the wind. How did you handle their first move?

I have printed ship cards with the historical names of the ships on them.

I have printed ship logs that corresponds, but now in the test game Imperial and a few frigates were using the ship mats with standard ships. It will be fixed for the real battle.

The French ships all did a "two hour glass" (second+ turn into the wind), taken aback move. In the battle I will use sail setting and then I'm contemplating using a house rule that a ship will loose speed every turn spent into the wind.

And thank you for the nice comments.

    Nice Pictures.

You invested a lot of work in this Scenario.

    Well done.

The RN had an great advantage with the starting formation and the wind conditions.

    A few questions:

Was is difficult to determin the attitude of the ships to the wind without lines on the blue?

Did you use standard rules or advanced rules?

Did the French struck colours because the scenario time was over?

    Thank you everyone.

Yes they had, and it's the historical conditions.

It wasn't difficult due to it being completely straight as the tables were and the "water" had slight folds. I don't find it difficult to align the wind as long as it's parallel to a table edge.

We used standard rules now but I will use advanced on the convention. Now some of the players had never played before and then I will run drop in learn to play runs for a whole day before the battle.

The French struck because they either ran out of hull or crew on all ships not stuck from running too close to the shore.

While a question not directed at me...

We don't have the official grided game mats. In our games I've never had any problems determining the attitude. The shape of the gauge allows players to generally line the gauge up, by eye, with the table edge.

While not directly needed for the game I had hoped to have this order from Miniature Market before the game this upcoming holiday-weekend.

It's mostly the big amount of card sleeves that I've ordered that would help out, I have enough for the big game, but no extras for the intro games if I play with ships not using the same decks, but there are also two Thorn/Atlanta in the package. Not only is it delayed, it's damaged too. :

LOL, "I international deelivery guy, I deeliver package, not bad job, but.. Yuri, don't smoosh package!", Jonas, don't feel bad, somethings up with postal around here, my wife just received some body lotion she ordered over a week ago and it looks like the box was under the truck for the trip, instead of inside. Also, I ordered some ships and supplies for SOG, from one state over, and after 8 business days, they're still MIA. I feel your pain. Your COASTLINE is phenomenal by the way, you definitely have the gift!

Missed this thread somehow, but I do remember the AAR. Great shots of the town, ships and landscaping.

My only experience with a chap named Jenkins comes from the online game World of Warcraft. If you don't know the game you'll not be aware of the fame, or infamy, of Leeroy Jenkins.
