Default AAR: The Long Journey Home - by spiessbuerger (Royal Prussian Navy)

    Rules:
Advanced, but no sail setting (Player: small sails, AI: battle sails)
Variable wind direction, coming from south, close hauled for Player ship

    Setting:
Prussian Kapitänleutnant Philipp von Mansfeld (Deft Captain) commanding the frigate Amazone (HMS Sybille) with burden 4 and 3 treasures on board heading home

Enemy frigate Proserpine with burden 4 on the far opposite side
Second enemy ship appears by dice rolling

    Goal:
Players frigate must reach far opposite side with small sails

    3. Turn:
The enemy ship of line Redoutable appears behind the Amazone and starts chasing the prussian frigate.

Size: 104.5 KB

    4. Turn:
Narrow Broadsides from Amazone and Redoutable. Fire and Rudder damage on the prussian frigate. Incoming water on the Redoutable.
Wind direction changes slowly to East. Not easy for the escaping Amazone.

    7. Turn:
The Proserpine took a bad intercepting course and is too far away to get in touch.
And the Redoutable seemed to be too slow to follow the Amazone because of bad wind direction.

    8.-11. Turn:
Wind changed slowly back to north. Distant shot from the Proserpine! But only small damage. The Redoubtable is too far away.

    12. Turn:
The Amazone escapes into the dusk with all three treasures on board. No chance for the two enemy ships.

    Conclusion:

Captain Philipp von Mansfeld (P) on the frigate Amazone: returned to port with three treasures, no injuries
victory (+1) for the Royal Prussian Navy

    - Rare contacts with enemy ships
    - Only to broadsides from enemy ships
    - Bad distant target course of AI ships -> I’m developing different AI-Rules for better distant maneuverings
    - Try to play the game with better distant AI-maneuvers and player ship as damaged from previous game
    - It’s important that AI-ships are faster than player ship

Thanks for the report! Well-organized and fun to read.

I'm interested in your thoughts on the AI. Are you thinking of making a different chart to model Interception-type behaviour? Or to tweak the maneuver choices in the existing chart for when the player is far away?

I would guess that the goal for the AI should be to ram/entangle/board the player's ship in this kind of scenario.

I made a different chart only for distant AI-movement (distance more than one ruler lenght). Should be available in the files section soon.
It's a first version and not tested a lot by myself. But in my tests it made much better results than the standard chart.

played again with same conditions but my new intercepting rules. (see http://sailsofglory.org/downloads.php?do=file&id=98)

The intercepting Frigate made a much better course to get me.

The enemy Frigate blocks my getaway course. Heavy fire, musketries and boarding follows.

    turn 7
no escaping. Can't get off the enemy Frigate. Second boarding. Unlucky for me... too many lost

The contrast between the two games could not be better Matt.
I can see that some very fine tuning is needed to get a decent balance in this scenario.
A pity there were not a few more takers to see how it went another time.
May have to give this one a go when i get time.

Thank you for the good AAR's, Matthias. It is useful to know how effective the solo play rules are.
