Default Reference materials for Raking Shots

    Hi all ...

So I got in on the Beta test of the Naval Action PC game and someone was discussing how raking shots - as implemented - aren't very effective; like they do NOTHING.

To my dismay one of the developers basically popped in and said "yeah, that's pirate-fiction fanboy nonsense. PROVE raking shots were effective."

So without me pointing to a website or anything that could be easily refuted, are there any good resources available that discuss the effectiveness (or lack of effectiveness, I'm open to being educated here) of the raking shot?

How about pointing them to just about any quality reading material on age of sail gunnery. Something by Brian Tunstall, Brian Lavery or Sam Willis should do.

Oh, and if they are averse to reading books try the Wiki page, wherein they shall find everybody's favourite example:

"The effectiveness of this tactic was demonstrated at the Battle of Trafalgar. Admiral Nelson's HMS Victory, leading the weather column of the British fleet, broke the French line just astern of the French flagship Bucentaure, and just ahead of Redoutable. Victory raked the Bucentaure's less protected stern killing 197 and wounding a further 85, including the Bucentaure's captain, Magendie. Admiral Villeneuve was lucky to survive, and although he was not captured for three hours, the raking put Bucentaure out of the fight."

Pirate fiction fanboy nonsense. Are you sure he wasn't talking about Rum and Bones?

Alyssa please keep us all informed how the Beta is going and if something the developers do that does not seem right.

I am really interested in this game!
