    In the article they show a picture of a 68 pounder carronade on the deck of the HMS Victory. I could not help but wonder what effect that gun would have on ten bowling pins...

    Sometimes the brain comes up with the strangest thoughts...

    They didn't call it the smasher for nothing. They could clear half a deck with a well aimed blast

    That is the best way to clear the deck of an enemy ship.

    They buildt (one?/a few?) special carronade frigates, namely a 1781 experiment which saw the Royal navy's HMS Rainbow fitted with some 44 64-, 42- and 32-pounder carronades, a combination which proved lethal in combat.

    *IF* one can get close enough -- witness what happened to USS _Essex_ when it couldn't close the range on its attackers.

    Hmm..yes, but what about HMS Glatton? Al those carrondaes certainly caused a bit of GBH in their time.
