Whenever a buddy of mine and I hear or say "11", we break into this skit. It used to be the line from Spinal Tap, but this has won out.

Smile when shouting. Smile when shouting. Got it. Thanks.

As I have been promoted to Ordinary Seaman and a slight remainder by Comte de Brueys, I got myself an avatar.

I'm using the name Hobbes since my early days on the Internet. At that time, i used to play Ego-Shooters and chose the name "First Tiger Hobbes" in honor of the comic strips "Calvin and Hobbes". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvin_and_Hobbes

My new avatar shows Hobbes having been awarded the "Bottle cap of Valor" for "courage in the face of temporary setbacks". I thought it fits today's promotion.

I was unable to register for some reason with my handle from other forums, I know a few other people had this issue as well. So, my favorite Napoleonic naval hero is Haratio Hornblower, so I selected his first ship in the Captain Horatio Hornblower trilogy 'Beat to Quarters'. The avatar I found on line ans is supposed to be the HMS Lydia. Since its a ficticious ship, I guess and British frigate could have substituted.

My avatar is Daryl Dragon, AKA 'The Captain' of 'The Captain and Tennille'.
Why? I'm not quite sure. It just struck me as funny at the moment.

As for 'GrouperKicker'... it just sort of stuck after a buddy of mine commented that the only 'sports' on ESPN2 back in the early 90's were the World's Strongest Man Contest, Fishing, European Soccer, Rugby and 'Grouper Kicking'.

I use DeRuyter because of my Dutch heritage and because he gave the mighty Royal Navy a bloody nose in the 17th century!

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michiel_de_Ruyter

Around the time this thread started I was in Amsterdam and saw the stern of the HMS Royal Charles at the Rijksmuseum. This was the English flagship captured in de Ruyter's Raid on the Medway in 1667.

My avatar is Commodore Oliver H. Perry. I went to college in Erie Pa and have been on the Niagara and of course it was appropriate this year being the bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie. Also I have always liked wargaming with the smaller vessels, frigate actions, lake actions, etc.

Thanks, Scott. I thought I had erased them from my memory. Now I hear her singing in my mind.

"Uthoroc" is the villain of my longest running role-playing campaign and has been my forum handle everywhere for years.

My avatar is a Bretonnian Galleon for Games Workshop's Man O'War game, scratch-built by myself. from paper, toothpicks and matches. Man O'War is the only tabletop game before X-Wing that I ever really got into and I still think it's one of the best games GW ever produced.

My avatar is HMS Trincomalee which is berthed in my hometown of Hartlepool, My username well, the inhabitants (Denizens?) of Hartlepool are known as monkey hangers after an unfortunate simian took a long drop at the end of a short rope during the Napoleonic wars as it was thought to be a spy. Chimpchoker is just a variation of the nick name.

I shutter to think what would happen if a town in the U.S. adopted or were tagged with such a name today.

My avatar is a poorly made and incorrectly rigged model of the Cutty Sark. My dad and I when I was a kid spent a lot of time building a model of the USS United States and I remember being impressed with how well it was rigged, at least before it fell off of a shelf and bounced off a dresser on its 7 foot trip to the floor. A couple of years ago while my wife was pregnant I got tired of sitting around the house watching her sleep so I decided to build a model ship. I figured why not I hadn't built a model in something like 25 years and I remember dad did all the rigging on the United States so I never really got a chance to do that might be a good way to kill some time. It actually looked pretty good for a little while despite there being really bad instructions and none at all on how to rig it...before the cat managed to get onto the curio cabinet and knock it 6 feet to the floor.

    Ok, moving on.....
    My handle comes from the name of a SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) household I belonged to;
we were members of a crew of late-Tudor period pirates (self-named "Aquatic Property Transfer Engineers"),
though we did have a warrant from the Crown (a pre-Letter of Marque) against the French. My position was the ships Master Gunner,
by virtue of having left a Imperial army in Italy, with several pieces of ordinance as my arrears' of pay....rather without permission, so a sea
voyage was a good bit of timing.
My Avatar is an ensign I designed, based on Tudor army ensigns being used in the Low countries at the time, or a bit later.
I do need to clean up the roses, when I have a chance.

The 'nick is one I've been using for a long time - comes from being a Jackie Chan fan.
The avatar is of Gregory Peck playing Horatio Hornblower, which I selected partially as I just like Gregory Peck, and partially as the less well known movie/TV incarnation of H.H. Not that I don't enjoy the later Ioan Gruffudd incarnation, I do - and wish they'd been able to finish out the series.
