Default On this day 3 August - Mediterranean Squadron begins a series of attacks on Tripoli

On the 3rd of August 1804, ships of the Mediterranean Squadron, under the command of Commodore Edward Preble, participated in an attack on Tripoli. The battle began in the morning as the USS Constitution (frigate), USS Argus (brig), USS Enterprise (schooner), USS Scourge (brig), and USS Syren (brig) provided long-range support for six gunboats and two bomb ketches. During the day's action, as well as attacks throughout the following weeks, Preble's squadron defeated the Tripoline gunboats sent out to meet it. Regardless, Yusuf (ibn Ali) Karamanli still demanded ransom and tribute.

That is classic. The thug gets his ass handed to him and still expects to get some tribute out of the deal.

So long as he's breathing, he has power.
