Thread: Pick a date

    Default Pick a date

Pick a date that you think the KS items will reach the Anchorage.

Pick a date is over. Keith will let me know the date they arrive at the Anchorage..

Since it doesn't look like I can get the exact date it arrives at the U.S. distributer, I'm changing it to the date that it arrives at the Anchorage. The winner will get their choice of any SoG ship with the exception of the 4 Kickstarter ships.

Must receive any changes or new entries by Aug. 31st. And you can't pick a date used by someone else.

Ed, you need to define this a little.

Do you mean the date of delivery?

  3. #3

Sorry, I thought it was pretty clear. When the shipment from China is delivered to the U.S. distribution warehouse..

Here's my guess (well several dates are being thrown out, actually), and I'm being conservative in my estimate, but not terribly so.

Gets to US warehouses by the end of September 2014 (time machine is busted, please note this should read 2013, edit).
KS backers get their items by October 24, 2013.
US retail stores get their products by November 11, 2013.

If any of these dates slip by more than a few weeks I expect we wont see product until February 2014 (Holidays; Christmas, New Years and Chinese New Year will push it back to the new year).

OCTOBER 15, 2013 To US distributor. Thought it best to specify the year as well seeing how long we've all been waiting.

Thanks Ed, I can be a little thick headed sometimes.

Ok, my guess is early September. Let's say September 4th.

Do I get an extra ration of grog if I win? .

If it gets here by 9/4/2013 I'll send you a bottle of Pusser's Rum, and you can mix your own grog.

If Ares attends Spiel in Essen (October 24th-27th, 2013) I would think that's a high priority date for general public release purposes? Which also means that it has to be to distributors some time in September if they're going to get it to KS backers before public release? Will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

    In Ares own words

Taking into account all the factors above, we expect to be able to ship the production out of China at the end of August or in the first days of September (after the mass production of the ships is completed, we've to go through the assembly, final packaging, testing).

Normally, the shipment takes about 4 weeks to get to our warehouse, so this means at the moment we expect to ship out your rewards around the end of September.

This optimistic scenario would be if there are absolutely no hold-ups or glitches from here on out.

I think what we need to ask is not when we get it. But, how fast will the rest of the world gets introduced to the product. I think Ares games (Wings, SoG, etc.) are quality games worthy of a lot more success. If people can see the product is accessible for all gaming types (casual, board, family, etc.), that will be a huge leap for it. The rules and systems are way better then other products like X-Wing (my opinions) yet receive few awards or rave reviews.

I'd bet a large part of it is FFG's scale and presence on the mass-market scene. When Target and Barnes & Noble stock your product at brick-and-mortar, that's a big help.

The problem on top of that is, Ares has to overcome all the bad PR from the Nexus days when they weren't really making their own decisions but had some pus-sucking numbskull beancounter at Italeri (who frequently can't even do their CORE PRODUCT of scale models right; us modelers say "the Italeri A-10 is what you build when you're NOT building an A-10") who had no competence or comprehension of what the business required forcing things down on them from above as I understand it.

If FFG and Ares partnered they could be a powerhouse, but there's a lot of bad blood on both sides from the Italeri days and it might be a bridge too far.

Another player and I tried playing it Sunday, neither of us having played before, and quit after a couple of hours. Although it has a "Risk" or "Axis and Allies" appearance to it, it is far more complicated than it first appears. You definitely need to get with someone that has played it few times.

I will check Boardgamegeek and YouTube. Folks often post instruction or session videos. I have seen some decent ones on other games. Thanks for the heads up.

Will you play it again? The reviews I read spoke highly of the game, and since I thoroughly enjoy Tolkien, I figured I would give it a try. It is not a small game for sure.

We did that and found an excellent sources on YouTube, thinking we could get a quick handle on the game. The only problem was that the parts added up to hours long. Also the miniatures look good but each side was mostly one color. You have to look closely to tell apart the different factions on one side. It seems like it can be a great game but you really need to do your homework before jumping into it.

I've been reading the War of the Ring rulebook, yes book, and cards to begin familiarizing myself with the game. Picked it up a few weeks back. I have yet to set up and try some game play. I am looking forward to getting to play some time soon. I'll admit it's been daunting but I'll agree with Coog that having someone who is familiar with the game would be preferable. Not to get too far off topic.

Paul, when have we ever stayed on topic?

I have a deadline on Monday, after which I plan on working my way through the game's material, and fly my current mission in the solo campaign on the Aerodrome. Carrots make the work more motivating.

When you play, let us know about your experience.
