    On 13 July 1854, the Sloop USS Cyane bombarded San Juan del Norte (Greytown), Nicaragua, in retaliation for ill-treatment of US Citizens. Marines and sailors also landed and seized weapons and powder in retribution for an attack on US Consular officials when the demand for reparations were refused.

    On 13 July 1812, the Frigate Essex, under the command of Captain David Porter, captured the British Merchant Brig Lamprey in the Atlantic. Previously, on the 11th July, she captured the British transport Brig Samuel & Sarah from a convoy of seven Ships protected by HMS Nimrod near Bermuda. Brig Samuel & Sarah was then ransomed for $12,000.
