Very interesting. I wonder what the public reaction would be if it is proven to be a slave ship. Regardless, it is nice to see some respect and appreciate for history make such tangible efforts.

I live just about 115 miles from Monterey. In fact, I was there with my son and daughter for an overnight sleepover as part of my son's Cub Scout Pack. It's a beautiful area. I may have to contribute to this project, because I'd love to see another tallship permanently harbored in the area.

Looks like they are at the very beginning of this project, but they need $30k just for the shipwright to draw up the plans. I see there is a Delaware connection (Samuel DuPont was her captain at one point) so I'll have to chip in!

I'm Tom Thiel with the Center for Living History here in Monterey Calif. We are the ones currently involved in trying to build a replica of the USS Cyane. I would be very happy to share what we have researched to date and answer any questions you may have. Building a tall ship is generally a process that takes many years before a plank gets set, especially in this current economy. I had the good fortune to see the laying of the keel of the Amistad at mystic sea port. The dedication and skill of the craftsmen and women on the project was amazing. We really need to keep these projects going so as not to lose this type of knowledge and history.

Thanks Cpt K, tall ship projects usually take about 15 yrs total from the "wouldn't it be cool stage" to actually setting a sail. We are currently in year 4. Once we raise half the funds, which would be four million, we feel that the rest could be raised while under construction from the increased project exposure and from tours of the project site. All it takes at this point is a few good donors who share our vision and passion for this period in sailing history. Finding those donors is the trick and is the point where we are now.
