Hey, a man's got to make some money somewhere, and I'm sure the young US Navy wasn't paying that great.
Pirate is such an ugly word....how about privateer with an eye to self-interests?
Re: games that allow you to control your own fleets irrespective of how they played historically? That's why I...
But why are there so many more French ships in the British navy, than British in the French navy? (just kidding...)
Good to have another member, Andy! Welcome aboard, from the colonies!
Welcome aboard, Mr. Harrison...lots of good conversation here so check in regularly!

I didn't realize WSIM came from that rule set! I think I still have a copy myself laying around in a box somewhere. What was old is new again, eh?
Wow, Bobby, you have really got some good reference sources! How in the world do you find these things? Very good articles, and great pics. I have made notes to use some of these in my US fleet...
Huzzah! I thought I woke up feeling different today! Finally, my true calling!
Wayne, I can't say anything better that hasn't already been said...beautiful job on the RS! I learned a few things myself from looking at this!

That's one of the cool things about this particular facet of gaming...you can use ships of other nations to add variety to your fleet.
I agree....if you've never seen or played WSIM you owe it to yourself to get it. It truly is a classic, and it's fun to play! I have taken the rules, converted hexes to inches, and used it with...
THat last comment is interesting, and could be easily modelled by adding the fourth sail up (sorry, can't recall the name of it right now). It would make the US ships more distinctive on the game...
Hey, Mark, I've heard of your rules but never tried them. Somewhere I saw they might be available as a free download? Free or not, how would one go about finding them?
thanks,
Rob
Hmmm...sometimes sheer audacity is NOT the best tactic.
Ok, my turn to be confused. I read those two links provided by Steve and both say Independence carried 90 guns when she first went to war. Bobby, are you going to play her as a 74, or do you mean...
Yep, fog of war would be vital yet tricky to pull off. Depends on your gaming group, too. I have friends wjo would be timid approaching mercantmen, and others who are bold approaching an obviously...
Cool! I will most definitely need some 74s, so I can see Independence and perhaps a sister joining the fleet.
Thanks for that lead, Bobby; I'll have to check ebay this weekend. I looked it up earlier but I forget now...how many guns was the Independence?
That would be a very cool scenario; I think you'd have to have the French player go into the game blind as to the fact that the ships are HEIC and not regular SOLs, though, or the French player would...
Sigh...why do we always have to wait on the good things in life? Well, at least we'll all become extremely familiar with each other after a year of talking on a web site for a game that isn't out...
I hadn't heard of that reference but I'll have to get it. I will probably keep the US navy as one of my mainstays. What will you use for the Independence (Brit, French, other)?
Sadly, I am thinking towards the end of the year. New ventures and all that...but one can always hope!
Coog, I have ready for battle the following: Constellation, Congress, Essex, United States and a little 28-gun frigate called Boston. All of these are Langtons except the Congress, which is a GHQ...
Ahhh, got it. I sort of got lost in the albums...I had no idea there were so many women in pirating! Makes me wish I'd lived back then!
