A friend suggested I build an island with a harbor from where privateers could spring unexpectedly on unsuspecting merchantmen.

Just the ticket Dobbs. Like the secluded bay and the Martello lookout Tower. Mount a battery on the Cliff top overlooking the harbour and you would be snug as a bug in a rug.
Rob.
Nice looking island Dobbs, I like the height of the cliffs, is that about 3" at its highest? I'm just in the process of building some terrain and have decided to go for cliffs aka Cptn Bligh and based on the Spanish cliffs and coast around Cap de la Noa in Spain and this is similar to what I'm after.
The cliffs are 2" at the highest. The island is carved out of 2" insulation foam.
Nice job . I hope I can do some similar .
I want to build some island for the Caribbean area
Julián sorted me out for some very natty palm trees which would suit your Caribbean model Ferrante, although I used mine for the scenery for the Battle of the Nile. You can just see them here:-

Drop him a PM if you fancy any.

Awesome looking privateer/pirate haven Dobbs!:hatsoff:
Thank you very much, Vol! ...and thanks for the rep points too!
Very welcome and much deserved IMO
Good work, Dobbs!
It will be interesting to see the outcome of your deliberations Ferrante.
I am starting to think about my next Magnum Opus and wondering about that wonderful town Castle an city wall complex which Julien did a while back.
Rob.
Dobbs, your privateer island is definitely more down to Earth then the over the top Pirate base I did back in 2015. Rep sent your way.
Or my "Turtle Island" Haha

Thanks Jim. Several years ago my youngest daughter, the "Artist", sculpted a sea turtle from clay in school. After they fired it she brought it home. I had it laying around the shipyard for quite a while and had used it in games as an island. A few years later my daughter, when she was in HS remarked about me keeping her old sculpture. Then she made a suggestion. Why don't I just paint it and make it a real island? Why didn't I think of that? So I did. (BTW I've kept nearly all the things my girls have made)
Thank you all, for the rep! Jim, I really like you stylized skull island. I have been contemplating water features on my islands, but it hasn't happened yet.
Vol, I have to say, I covet your turtle island!
Thanks Dobbs. I've been saying for years that I need to finish the island with a dock and base to show some sand, etc., but that hasn't happened yet. I'd definitely do the water differently if I tried to attempt it again as I learned some neat tricks from my model railroading hobby that would enhance the effect.
