Challenger best bitter is brewed by the Ales of Scilly brewery based on St Mary's, the largest of the Scilly islands off the coast of Cornwall.

H.M.S. Association, flagship of the British fleet, struck the Gilstone Ledge in 1707 and sank within three minutes. Three other ships foundered that same night with the loss of two thousand sailors. This was described as the worst naval disaster of all time.

The Nancy was a packet ship from India, which struck a reef and sank in 1784. Amongst the passengers lost was Ann Cargill a famous actress of the time and her young child.
