Scratch Building HMS Leopard Part 6

Painting and Detailing, continued

I didn't have a lot of time to spend today, so a small update this evening.

I began with the yellow bands. I did them free hand... Working in this scale, I suddenly realize that my hands aren't as steady as I thought they were! But these are passable. I've intentionally left the rear quarter of the ship for now. I'm still contemplating how I want to do the windows, so I'm keeping my options open for now.

Next, I added the gun ports. Also by hand... Yikes! Originally, I had planned to add a gun barrel for each port. I experimented with a couple of ways to go about doing that, but didn't care for the results. So, I've chosen to simply paint the gun ports on to the hull. I may touch them up a bit before i call them finished, but here's what I have so far.

Next, I added the guns that are visible. Two bow chasers, and six guns on the Upper Gun Deck. There should actually be two more guns on the Quarter Deck (one on each side), but I have dropped one and have yet to find it. I'll either have to make a new one, or I may simply leave them off. I'm undecided, for now.

I've got to tell you that maneuvering these guns into place and gluing them down is quite an experience. Getting them into place and having them stay there as you draw your tweezers away is challenging to say the least.

Here's the result, after some tense moments and a few expletives.

I also drilled the holes for the masts, before setting the project aside for today.

NEXT UP: Rear Window! or Stepping the Masts! (I haven't decided yet)

Looking good Dave. I don't see the hole for the main in the quarter deck?

Just read yor response on page 5. TMP is The Miniatures Page. In the message boards there is a Napoleonic board. Sub-boards include Napoleonic Naval Discussion and Napoleonic Naval Painting Guide. Several of us post our work there and hold interesting discussions. On the main page menues to the left you will find the links to the message boards and to Workbench articles. I posted an article a year or so ago about constructing 1:1200 scale Napoleonic ships. I think this would be an ideal forum for your Leopard build. You will also find just about everything about all genra of miniatures, gaming, modeling, vendors, manufacturers, etc. Anything you could possibly dream of on this site. Check it out, it's free to join.

Unless I have read the plan sheets incorrectly, the main mast is just forward of the quarter deck, on the upper gun deck. I'll take a closer look, it isn't too late to correct, if I made a mistake.

Thanks for the TMP info. I will check that out!
