Hendrick Hudson sailed the Atlantic in 1609 in the Half Moon with a crew of 10. He was looking for a trade route to India. In October of 1609 he sailed into what would become New York harbor and up what would later be named the Hudson River. He sailed almost as far as present day Albany before turning around and heading back. A replica of the Half Moon Sails the Hudson in the summer as a floating historical classroom for schools and interested citizens. It passes my place about twice per summer.
